Driving Lessons in Bermondsey: Jamaica Road, the A200 and Testing at Mitcham and Bromley
Driving lessons in Bermondsey with door-to-door pickup and free theory practice. Manual & automatic, Mitcham and Bromley centres covered.

Bermondsey is a district in the borough of Southwark, and Southwark has no practical driving test centre — not in Bermondsey, not anywhere in the borough. Until February 2025 many local learners tested at Hither Green in Lewisham, but the DVSA closed that centre on 1 February 2025 and no tests have been held there since. If you are looking for driving lessons in Bermondsey, this guide is the district version of that borough story. Our Southwark guide covers the borough from Walworth Road and the Elephant, and our Peckham guide covers Rye Lane; Bermondsey's driving is different from both — riverfront and corridor driving: Jamaica Road (the A200), Bermondsey Street, the London Bridge and Tower Bridge approaches, and the Rotherhithe edge — plus the two centres Bermondsey learners actually test at, Mitcham and Bromley.
Learn and Drive covers Bermondsey: our instructors offer door-to-door pickup, so your lesson starts at your home, work or college — no travelling to a meeting point. Exact pickup for your postcode is confirmed when you book, whether you are around Bermondsey Street, Jamaica Road, Spa Road and the Blue, Surrey Quays side, Rotherhithe side or towards London Bridge and Borough. We offer manual and automatic lessons, female instructors are available, and intensive courses are available for learners working to a deadline.
Bermondsey driving test centre — there isn't one; Mitcham and Bromley are where you test
There is no practical test centre in Bermondsey or in Southwark. Thorough searching of DVSA-derived centre listings finds none for the borough, and providers covering the borough say the same plainly: there is no Southwark practical test centre. Southwark does have theory test provision in the borough — theory only. The DVSA does not site practical centres in the central London streets around London Bridge and Borough Market, so Bermondsey learners travel south to test.
The centre that used to serve this area, Hither Green, at 42-44 Ennersdale Road, Hither Green, London, SE13 6JD, has closed. The DVSA announced that from 1 February 2025 it would no longer carry out driving tests at Hither Green, citing issues affecting the safety and quality of tests there, and that tests already booked from that date would be moved to nearby centres, including Bromley. Many older directories still list Ennersdale Road as a live centre. It is not. Do not travel there on test day; follow your GOV.UK booking confirmation instead.
Bermondsey learners now test mainly at Mitcham or Bromley, consistent with our Southwark and Peckham guides. Mitcham is at Redhouse Road, Mitcham, CR0 3AQ, on an industrial estate off the A236, south-west across the borough and Streatham, past Mitcham Common. We do not quote a pass rate for Mitcham: as our Mitcham guide explains, directory figures for it conflict too widely to present one number as fact, and we found no Mitcham figure on passdrivingtest.co.uk — the honest position is that no citable rate exists here. Bromley (London) is at 121-123 Burnt Ash Lane, Bromley, BR1 5AB, south-east via the South Circular and Catford side, with a pass rate of 52.9% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data). Morden, at 10 Tudor Drive, Morden, SM4 4PE, is a further option for some learners, with a pass rate of 50.96% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data). Whichever you book, the standard is the national standard, identical everywhere.
You must have passed your theory test before booking a practical. Nationally the theory test costs £23 and the practical costs £62 on a weekday or £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Waits are still long nationally — the National Audit Office reported an average wait of around 22 weeks in September 2025 — so talk to your instructor about booking early.
The local driving that matters in Bermondsey
Jamaica Road, the A200, is Bermondsey's examination hall, even though no examiner will ever sit in it with you. It runs the length of the district from the Rotherhithe Tunnel approach in the east to the Tower Bridge Road junction in the west: bus lanes, signal-controlled junctions in quick succession, the Bermondsey station and Surrey Quays side turnings, and traffic that alternates between flowing and stationary with little warning. Driving it well is lane discipline plus anticipation — choosing your lane before the junction that needs it, reading bus lane plates, and never blocking a side road or crossing when the queue stops.
Bermondsey Street is the second theme, and the opposite kind of road: narrow, with parked cars, loading vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians stepping out between vans. Tower Bridge Road (A100) and Tooley Street, past London Bridge station, add bridge-approach driving: multi-lane queues, lane splits for the bridges and the station, and tourists crossing where you do not expect them. The Rotherhithe edge — Rotherhithe Street's residential loop round the peninsula, Brunel Road and the tunnel approach roads — is quieter, and it is where Bermondsey learners can build meeting traffic and manoeuvre skills without Jamaica Road's pressure.
Most of Bermondsey is 20mph off the main corridors, and holding exactly that on the Spa Road and Southwark Park side streets, while everything happens around you, is a genuine skill. Then there is the driving your test actually samples. South-west to Mitcham, the run crosses Camberwell and Streatham and follows the A236 corridor past Mitcham Common to the estate roads around Redhouse Road. South-east to Bromley, the run goes via the South Circular through Catford and its gyratory, then onto the A2212 Burnt Ash Lane and A21 corridors Bromley routes use, with Grove Park and Downham residential streets for manoeuvres. An instructor who only ever drives you around SE1 and SE16 is preparing you for half your test — the district half, not the test half.
Timing matters. Jamaica Road, Tower Bridge Road and Tooley Street are slow from early morning, match and event traffic affects the London Bridge side, and the Rotherhithe Tunnel queues back through the district in both peaks. Practise in those conditions before test day, not just on a quiet Sunday.
Practising around Bermondsey between lessons
Private practice with a legally qualified supervising driver, in a car insured for you and displaying L plates, works best in Bermondsey when you split it between district driving and test-centre driving — and treat the second as non-negotiable, because your test is not local.
Start on the Rotherhithe peninsula and the streets around Southwark Park and Spa Road, where 20mph discipline, meeting traffic between parked cars and manoeuvres on residential streets can be built without the A200's full intensity. Then work Jamaica Road end to end, Bermondsey Street, and Tower Bridge Road at busier times, for bus lanes, crossings, loading traffic and junction patience.
Make the run to your booked centre a regular session: south-west through Streatham to Mitcham Common and Redhouse Road, or south-east via the South Circular and Catford to Burnt Ash Lane and the Grove Park streets, until both feel like home roads. Between drives, use our free theory practice — 6,500+ questions, DVSA-format mock tests, 3D hazard perception practice and 178 road signs. The DVSA no longer publishes official test routes, so treat any route list as a guide to road types, not a promise.
Choosing an instructor in Bermondsey
When you compare driving instructors in Bermondsey, check the badge in the windscreen. A green badge means a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). A pink badge means a trainee Potential Driving Instructor (PDI), teaching legally while still qualifying under supervision. Knowing which you have booked helps you judge experience fairly.
Then ask the Bermondsey question: which centre are you teaching me for, and how do we get there? An instructor who still talks about Hither Green as your target is preparing you for a test that no longer exists. You want one who works regularly from Mitcham or Bromley and builds lessons around Bermondsey's corridors and that centre's roads as one planned programme. Ask how you will travel to the centre on test day, about manual and automatic, female instructors if you would prefer one, and pickup from your exact address. Our guide to driving schools near me explains the rest of the checklist — lesson structure, progress tracking, mock tests and cancellation terms — and our Southwark guide and Peckham guide cover the rest of the borough.
A proper mock matters in Bermondsey because the real test happens in another part of south London. Run it at your booked centre, marked strictly. Ignore any guaranteed-pass promise.

Frequently asked questions
Where do Bermondsey learners take their driving test?
Usually at Mitcham, Redhouse Road, Mitcham, CR0 3AQ, or at Bromley (London), 121-123 Burnt Ash Lane, Bromley, BR1 5AB. Morden, SM4 4PE, is a further option. There is no practical test centre in Bermondsey or Southwark, and Hither Green closed on 1 February 2025. Always follow your booking confirmation.
What happened to Hither Green test centre?
The DVSA stopped carrying out tests there from 1 February 2025, citing issues affecting the safety and quality of tests, and moved booked tests to nearby centres including Bromley. The centre at 42-44 Ennersdale Road, SE13 6JD, still appears in many old directories, but no test can be booked there.
What is the pass rate for Bermondsey learners' test centres?
Bromley (London) publishes 52.9% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data) and Morden publishes 50.96% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data). We do not quote a rate for Mitcham, honestly: no figure for it exists on the sources this guide is permitted to cite, and directory figures conflict too widely to present one number as fact.
Can I learn in an automatic in Bermondsey?
Yes. We offer manual and automatic lessons in Bermondsey. An automatic pass gives you an automatic-only licence, while a manual pass covers both. Many local learners choose automatic because so much district driving is stop-start on Jamaica Road and around London Bridge.
Which areas should I practise most in Bermondsey?
Jamaica Road (A200) end to end for lanes and bus awareness, Bermondsey Street and Tooley Street for narrow-street and station traffic, Tower Bridge Road, and the Rotherhithe and Southwark Park streets for 20mph discipline and manoeuvres — plus regular sessions at your booked centre, Mitcham or Bromley.
How much do driving lessons in Bermondsey cost?
See our prices page for current packages and confirm for your postcode when you book. We do not publish a fixed Bermondsey per-hour price here; as context, our Manchester lessons start from £35 per hour. The theory test is £23 and the practical is £62 on a weekday or £75 at evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
