Peckham is in the borough of Southwark, and Southwark has no practical driving test centre — not in Peckham, not anywhere in the borough. Until February 2025 many Peckham learners tested at Hither Green in Lewisham, but the DVSA closed that centre on 1 February 2025 and no tests have been held there since. If you are looking for driving lessons in Peckham, your preparation therefore has the same two-part shape as our Southwark guide describes: learn Peckham's own intense, bus-heavy, 20mph driving properly, and make your booked test centre — usually Mitcham or Bromley — just as familiar. This guide is the Peckham version of that story: Rye Lane rather than Walworth Road, Peckham Rye rather than the Elephant, and Queens Road rather than the Old Kent Road.

Learn and Drive covers Peckham: our instructors offer door-to-door pickup, so your lesson starts at your home, work or college — no travelling to a meeting point. Exact pickup for your postcode is confirmed when you book, whether you are in Peckham town centre, around Peckham Rye, Nunhead side, Queens Road side, Bellenden Road side or towards East Dulwich and Camberwell. We offer manual and automatic lessons, female instructors are available, and intensive courses are available for learners working to a deadline.

Peckham driving test centre — there isn't one; Mitcham and Bromley are where you test

There is no practical test centre in Peckham or in Southwark. Thorough searching of DVSA-derived centre listings finds none, and providers covering the borough say so plainly. Peckham does sit among theory test provision in south London, but theory and practical are different tests in different places: passing your theory locally does not mean your practical is local.

The centre that used to serve this area, Hither Green, at 42-44 Ennersdale Road, Hither Green, London, SE13 6JD, has closed. The DVSA announced that from 1 February 2025 it would no longer carry out driving tests at Hither Green, citing issues affecting the safety and quality of tests there — inadequate road environments, logistical constraints and repetitive routes — and that tests already booked from that date would be moved to nearby centres, including Bromley. Many older directories still list Ennersdale Road as live. It is not. Do not travel there on test day.

Peckham learners now test mainly at Mitcham or Bromley, consistent with our Southwark guide. Mitcham is at Redhouse Road, Mitcham, CR0 3AQ, on an industrial estate off the A236, south-west across Streatham and past Mitcham Common. We do not quote a pass rate for Mitcham: as our Mitcham guide explains, directory figures for it conflict too widely to present one number as fact, and we found no Mitcham figure on passdrivingtest.co.uk — the honest position is that no citable rate exists here, not that one is hidden. Bromley (London) is at 121-123 Burnt Ash Lane, Bromley, BR1 5AB, south-east via the South Circular and Catford side, with a pass rate of 52.9% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data). Morden, at 10 Tudor Drive, Morden, SM4 4PE, is a further option for some learners, with a pass rate of 50.96% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data). Whichever you book, the standard is the national standard, identical everywhere.

You must have passed your theory test before booking a practical. Nationally the theory test costs £23 and the practical costs £62 on a weekday or £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Waits are still long nationally — the National Audit Office reported an average wait of around 22 weeks in September 2025 — so talk to your instructor about booking early, and check your booking confirmation for the definitive centre and address for your date.

The local driving that matters in Peckham

Rye Lane is Peckham's examination hall, even though no examiner will ever sit in it with you. For much of its length it is effectively a bus-and-pedestrian street in all but name: buses in both directions, shoppers crossing anywhere, market and shop deliveries, cyclists filtering, and almost no margin for impatience. Driving it well is anticipation at walking pace — reading people, not just vehicles — and it teaches hazard perception better than any quiet street can. Peckham High Street and the junction area by Peckham Rye station, with the Queens Road and Peckham Road approaches, concentrate the same problems into a tighter, signal-controlled tangle where lane choice has to be early.

Queens Road, running east towards New Cross, is the second theme: a wider, faster-feeling corridor with bus lanes, side turnings and the traffic around Queens Road Peckham station, where the driving changes character completely from Rye Lane's crawl. Peckham Rye itself — the common, and the roads around its edges towards East Dulwich and Nunhead — brings a third character: residential streets, parked terraces, school traffic and 20mph discipline that has to be exact, held steadily while everything happens around you. Most of Peckham is 20mph, and examiners everywhere mark speed discipline; Peckham simply trains it daily.

Then there is the driving your test actually samples. South-west to Mitcham, the run crosses Camberwell and Streatham and follows the A236 corridor past Mitcham Common to the estate roads around Redhouse Road. South-east to Bromley, the run goes via Nunhead and the South Circular side, through Catford and its gyratory, then onto the A2212 Burnt Ash Lane and A21 corridors Bromley routes use, with Grove Park and Downham residential streets for manoeuvres. An instructor who only ever drives you around SE15 is preparing you for half your test — the borough half, not the test half.

Timing matters. Rye Lane and the High Street are slow for most of the day, school traffic shapes the streets around the Rye in both peaks, and the South Circular queues hard. Practise in those conditions before test day, not just on a quiet Sunday morning.

Practising around Peckham between lessons

Private practice with a legally qualified supervising driver, in a car insured for you and displaying L plates, works best in Peckham when you split it between neighbourhood driving and test-centre driving — and treat the second as non-negotiable, because your test is not local.

Start around Peckham Rye, Nunhead and the Bellenden Road side, where 20mph discipline, meeting traffic between parked cars and manoeuvres on terraced streets can be built without Rye Lane's full intensity. Then work Rye Lane, the High Street and Queens Road at busier times for bus awareness, crossings and junction patience.

Make the run to your booked centre a regular session: south-west through Streatham to Mitcham Common and Redhouse Road, or south-east via the South Circular and Catford to Burnt Ash Lane and the Grove Park streets, until the journey and the test area both feel like home roads. Between drives, use our free theory practice — 6,500+ questions, DVSA-format mock tests, 3D hazard perception practice and 178 road signs. The DVSA no longer publishes official test routes, so treat any route list as a guide to road types, not a promise — and any "Hither Green test route" product as a historical document.

Choosing an instructor in Peckham

When you compare driving instructors in Peckham, check the badge in the windscreen. A green badge means a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). A pink badge means a trainee Potential Driving Instructor (PDI), teaching legally while still qualifying under supervision. Knowing which you have booked helps you judge experience fairly.

Then ask the Peckham question: which centre are you teaching me for, and how do we get there? An instructor who still talks about Hither Green as your target is preparing you for a test that no longer exists. You want one who works regularly from Mitcham or Bromley and builds lessons around Peckham's streets and that centre's roads as one planned programme. Ask how you will travel to the centre on test day, about manual and automatic, female instructors if you would prefer one, and pickup from your exact address. Our guide to driving schools near me explains the rest of the checklist.

A proper mock matters in Peckham because the real test happens in another part of south London. Run it at your booked centre, marked strictly. Ignore any guaranteed-pass promise.

Frequently asked questions

Where do Peckham learners take their driving test?

Usually at Mitcham, Redhouse Road, Mitcham, CR0 3AQ, or at Bromley (London), 121-123 Burnt Ash Lane, Bromley, BR1 5AB. Morden, SM4 4PE, is a further option. There is no practical test centre in Peckham or Southwark, and Hither Green closed on 1 February 2025. Always follow your booking confirmation.

What happened to Hither Green test centre?

The DVSA stopped carrying out tests there from 1 February 2025, citing issues affecting the safety and quality of tests, and moved booked tests to nearby centres including Bromley. The centre at 42-44 Ennersdale Road, SE13 6JD, still appears in many old directories, but no test can be booked there.

What is the pass rate for Peckham learners' test centres?

Bromley (London) publishes 52.9% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data) and Morden publishes 50.96% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data). We do not quote a rate for Mitcham, honestly: no figure for it exists on the sources this guide is permitted to cite, and directory figures conflict too widely to present one number as fact.

Can I learn in an automatic in Peckham?

Yes. We offer manual and automatic lessons in Peckham. An automatic pass gives you an automatic-only licence, while a manual pass covers both.

Which areas should I practise most in Peckham?

Rye Lane and Peckham High Street for anticipation and bus awareness, Queens Road for bus lanes and faster corridor driving, and the streets around Peckham Rye and Nunhead for 20mph discipline and manoeuvres — plus regular sessions at your booked centre, Mitcham or Bromley.

How much do driving lessons in Peckham cost?

See our prices page for current packages and confirm for your postcode when you book. We do not publish a fixed Peckham per-hour price here; as context, our Manchester lessons start from £35 per hour. The theory test is £23 and the practical is £62 on a weekday or £75 at evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
