Tameside is a borough of towns, not a single place — Ashton-under-Lyne, Hyde, Stalybridge, Dukinfield, Droylsden, Denton, Audenshaw and Mossley — and it currently has no driving test centre of its own. That is not a gap in this guide; it is the guide. Directories still carry addresses for centres in Ashton and Hyde, but the Hyde centre closed permanently in April 2022 and tests no longer take place at the Ashton site either, so Tameside learners now split two ways: south and east Tameside tests mainly at Bredbury, in Stockport, and north and west Tameside mainly at Chadderton, in Oldham. If you are looking for driving lessons in Tameside, your lessons have two jobs — make you a good driver on Tameside's own roads, from the A57 to Ashton's town centre — and take you, deliberately and repeatedly, to whichever of those two centres you book.

Learn and Drive covers Tameside: our instructors offer door-to-door pickup, so your lesson starts at your home, work or college — no travelling to a meeting point. Exact pickup for your postcode is confirmed when you book, whether you are in Ashton-under-Lyne, Hyde, Stalybridge, Dukinfield, Droylsden, Denton, Audenshaw or Mossley. We offer manual and automatic lessons, female instructors are available, and intensive courses are available for learners working to a deadline.

Tameside driving test centres — none in the borough; Bredbury and Chadderton serve it

Take the closed centres first, because old listings still send people there. Hyde driving test centre, formerly at 23 Perrin Street, Hyde, SK14 1JE, is permanently closed: the DVSA confirmed its closure, it shut after Sunday 10 April 2022, and centre directories now list it as permanently closed with Bredbury, Chadderton and Cheetham Hill as the nearest alternatives — local reporting at the time recorded the same closure and the same replacement centres. Ashton-under-Lyne's test site, at the Halfords store on Snipe Retail Park, Manchester Road, Ashton-under-Lyne, OL7 0DN, is likewise historic: centre directories state plainly that driving tests from this location no longer take place. Do not plan a test around either address, whatever an old web page says.

The two centres Tameside learners actually use are these. Bredbury (Manchester) driving test centre is at Lingard Lane, Bredbury, Stockport, SK6 2QT — an address consistent across DVSA-derived listings (a GOV.UK listing gives 90 Lingard Lane) and multiple centre directories. It sits just south of the borough, handy for Hyde, Dukinfield, Stalybridge and Denton learners via the A560 and A57. The pass rate at Bredbury (Manchester) is 55.97% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data), above the national average. Its routes mix the Lingard Lane industrial area, Stockport Road, the A560 towards the M60 junction 25 area and Portwood, and residential Bredbury, Woodley and Brinnington.

Chadderton driving test centre is at 9 Broadgate, Broadway Business Park, Chadderton, Oldham, OL9 9XA — an address consistent across the DVSA-derived centre feed and multiple centre directories. It sits north-west of the borough, handy for Ashton, Droylsden and Audenshaw learners via the A627 and A663 Broadway. The pass rate at Chadderton is 46.75% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data), below the national average, reflecting a busy Oldham-side route mix of business park roads, the A663 dual carriageway and multi-lane roundabouts — not harder marking, which is national. Local instructor coverage for Tameside names Bredbury and Chadderton as the borough's two main centres, which matches this split.

Choose by geography and preparation, not by chasing the higher figure: a Bredbury test driven by a learner who has only practised around Ashton is a worse bet than a Chadderton test driven by one who knows Broadway well.

You must have passed your theory test before booking a practical. Nationally the theory test costs £23 and the practical costs £62 on a weekday or £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Waits are still long nationally — the National Audit Office reported an average wait of around 22 weeks in September 2025 — so talk to your instructor about booking early. Check your booking confirmation for the definitive address for your date.

The local driving that matters in Tameside

Start with the borough's spine roads, because they are both everyday driving and the routes to your test. The A57 runs east-west through Denton, Audenshaw and Hyde as Manchester Road and Hyde Road: multi-lane sections, traffic-light junctions, bus traffic and the M67 and M60 junctions at its ends — lane choice has to be early and committed. The A635 Manchester Road runs from Ashton towards Manchester through Droylsden, past the Snipe Retail Park where tests once started, with retail traffic, crossings and side turnings in succession. The A627 Oldham Road carries Ashton north towards Oldham and, for Chadderton candidates, on towards Broadway. The A6017 Stockport Road links Denton to Stockport and is the natural run south for Bredbury candidates.

Ashton-under-Lyne town centre is the borough's urban test of patience: Stamford Street and the streets around Ashton Market, the bus station traffic, one-way sections and the large retail roundabouts on the A635 corridor near the M60 junction 23. Peak times here are genuinely slow, and forward planning — not speed — is what good driving looks like. Hyde town centre adds a tighter version of the same skills around Market Street and the A560, and Stalybridge adds hills: the town sits in the Tame valley, its streets climb, and hill starts and descending control are everyday skills there in a way they are not in Denton or Droylsden. Dukinfield and Mossley extend that pattern — valley roads, gradients and narrower older streets.

The residential layer is where Tameside manoeuvres live: the estates of Hattersley, the streets around Ashton Moss and Guide Bridge, Droylsden's older terraces near the canal, and the newer estates around Audenshaw and Denton — parked cars, 20mph zones in places, school traffic and meeting traffic on single-file gaps.

Then your lessons leave the borough, deliberately. Bredbury candidates need Lingard Lane, Stockport Road and the A560 and Portwood roundabouts until they are familiar; Chadderton candidates need the Broadway Business Park start, the A663, Foxdenton Lane and Middleton Road. The final third of your course belongs at your centre.

Practising around Tameside between lessons

Private practice with a legally qualified supervising driver, in a car insured for you and displaying L plates, works best in Tameside in two layers: the borough first, then your chosen centre's area as test day approaches.

In Tameside, work the A57 and A635 in both directions at peak times, Ashton town centre around the market and bus station, Hyde and Dukinfield town driving, and Stalybridge and Mossley for gradient work. Use your own town's estates for manoeuvres, meeting traffic and 20mph discipline, and drive at school-run times, not just on quiet Sunday mornings.

Then make your centre run a habit. Bredbury learners: south via the A6017 or A560 to Lingard Lane, and practise the centre's ground — Stockport Road, the A560, Portwood and the Bredbury and Woodley streets. Chadderton learners: north via the A627 to Broadway, and practise Broadgate, the A663, Foxdenton Lane and Middleton Road. Do the full test-day journey in practice at least twice — home to centre, arrive, settle — so nothing about the day is new except the examiner.

Between drives, use our free theory practice — 6,500+ questions, DVSA-format mock tests, 3D hazard perception practice and 178 road signs. The DVSA no longer publishes official test routes, so treat any route list as a guide to road types, not a promise.

Choosing an instructor in Tameside

When you compare driving instructors in Tameside, check the badge in the windscreen. A green badge means a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). A pink badge means a trainee Potential Driving Instructor (PDI), teaching legally while still qualifying under supervision. Knowing which you have booked helps you judge experience fairly.

Ask the Tameside question directly: there is no test centre in the borough — the Hyde and Ashton sites are closed — so where will my test be, and will my lessons actually go there? An instructor who teaches Tameside learners should answer clearly: Bredbury for the south and east of the borough, Chadderton for the north and west, with a programme that splits time between Tameside's own roads and the chosen centre's area, including at least one strict mock from that centre. Be wary of anyone still talking about booking at Hyde or Ashton. Ask about manual and automatic, female instructors if you would prefer one, and pickup from your exact address. Our guide to driving schools near me explains the rest of the checklist — lesson structure, progress tracking, mock tests and cancellation terms. Ignore any guaranteed-pass promise.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a driving test centre in Tameside?

No — not currently. Hyde driving test centre (formerly 23 Perrin Street, Hyde, SK14 1JE) closed permanently after 10 April 2022, and centre directories state that tests no longer take place at the former Ashton-under-Lyne site on Snipe Retail Park (OL7 0DN) either. Tameside learners test mainly at Bredbury or Chadderton. Always follow the centre named on your booking confirmation.

What are the pass rates at the centres Tameside learners use?

The pass rate at Bredbury (Manchester) is 55.97% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data), above the national average. The pass rate at Chadderton is 46.75% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data), below it. Choose by geography and preparation — a familiar centre beats a higher headline figure at an unfamiliar one.

Which centre should I choose, Bredbury or Chadderton?

The one nearest your side of the borough, whose roads your lessons will cover. Hyde, Dukinfield, Stalybridge and Denton point naturally to Bredbury (Lingard Lane, Stockport, SK6 2QT); Ashton-under-Lyne, Droylsden and Audenshaw point to Chadderton (9 Broadgate, Broadway Business Park, OL9 9XA). Mossley learners can reasonably use either, depending on where their practice time goes.

Can I still book a test at Hyde or Ashton-under-Lyne?

No. Both are historic sites only — Hyde closed permanently in April 2022 and tests no longer take place at the Ashton Halfords site. Some directories still list them, which is exactly why this guide names them as closed. Book Bredbury or Chadderton, or another live centre your instructor covers.

Can I learn in an automatic in Tameside?

Yes. We offer manual and automatic lessons across Tameside. An automatic pass gives you an automatic-only licence, while a manual pass covers both.

How much do driving lessons in Tameside cost?

See our prices page for current packages and confirm for your postcode when you book. We do not publish a fixed Tameside per-hour price here; as context, our Manchester lessons start from £35 per hour. The theory test is £23 and the practical is £62 on a weekday or £75 at evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
