Driving Lessons in Southwark: Mitcham Test Centre, Walworth Road and Local Tips
Driving lessons in Southwark with door-to-door pickup and free theory practice. Manual & automatic, Mitcham test centre covered.

Southwark is central London, and central London does not host practical driving tests. There is no test centre in the borough — not at Elephant and Castle, not in Walworth, not anywhere in SE1, SE5, SE15 or SE17 — and your practical will take place south of the borough, at Mitcham or at Bromley. Until February 2025 many Southwark learners tested at Hither Green, in Lewisham, but the DVSA closed that centre on 1 February 2025 and no tests have been held there since. If you are looking for driving lessons in Southwark, that is not bad news: it means your lessons have two jobs. They need to make you genuinely good at the dense, slow, bus-lane driving Southwark itself demands every day, and they need to make the Mitcham and Bromley test areas feel just as familiar before test day.
Learn and Drive covers Southwark: our instructors offer door-to-door pickup, so your lesson starts at your home, work or college — no travelling to a meeting point. Exact pickup for your postcode is confirmed when you book, whether you are in Bermondsey, Rotherhithe, Walworth, Camberwell, Peckham, Nunhead, East Dulwich or around Elephant and Castle. We offer manual and automatic lessons, female instructors are available, and intensive courses are available for learners working to a deadline.
Southwark driving test centre — there isn't one; Mitcham and Bromley are where you test
Start with the confusion to avoid. Southwark does have a theory test centre in the borough, in the Walworth area — theory only. For the practical test, thorough searching of DVSA-derived centre listings finds no Southwark centre at all, and course providers covering the borough say the same plainly: there is no Southwark practical test centre. The DVSA does not site practical centres in the central London streets around Borough Market, London Bridge and the Elephant, and no amount of searching older directories will produce one.
Until recently, the centre Southwark learners used was Hither Green, at 42-44 Ennersdale Road, Hither Green, London, SE13 6JD, in the borough of Lewisham. That centre has closed. The DVSA announced that from 1 February 2025 it would no longer carry out driving tests at Hither Green, citing issues affecting the safety and quality of tests there, and that tests already booked from that date would be moved to nearby centres, including Bromley. Hither Green does not appear in the DVSA's current list of London test centres, and you cannot book a test there. Warning: many older directories still list Ennersdale Road as a live centre — some still describe it as the centre for SE1, SE5, SE15 and SE17 — but any page that sends you there for a test is out of date. Do not travel to Hither Green on test day; follow your GOV.UK booking confirmation instead.
The centre Southwark learners now use first is Mitcham, at Redhouse Road, Mitcham, CR0 3AQ, on an industrial estate off the A236 — current provider pages covering Southwark name Mitcham, about six miles south-west, as the nearest centre, and it is the centre this guide leads with. We do not quote a pass rate for Mitcham: as our Mitcham guide explains, directory figures for it conflict too widely to present one number as fact, and we found no Mitcham figure on passdrivingtest.co.uk. For learners in the east of the borough, Bromley is the other main choice — the centre the DVSA itself named when Hither Green's tests were moved. Bromley (London) is at 121-123 Burnt Ash Lane, Bromley, BR1 5AB, with a pass rate of 52.9% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data). Morden, at 10 Tudor Drive, Morden, SM4 4PE, is a further option, with a pass rate of 50.96% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data). Whichever you book, the routes are proper south London routes and the test standard is the same everywhere.
You must have passed your theory test before booking a practical. Nationally the theory test costs £23 and the practical costs £62 on a weekday or £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Waits are still long nationally — the National Audit Office reported an average wait of around 22 weeks in September 2025 — so talk to your instructor about booking early, and check your booking confirmation for the definitive centre and address for your date.
The local driving that matters in Southwark
Southwark driving is defined by three roads and one junction. The junction is Elephant and Castle: multi-lane roundabout traffic, bus lanes entering and leaving, cyclists everywhere, and lanes that split for the A3, the A201 and Walworth Road with little forgiveness for a late change. You will not meet it on your test, but you will meet it in your first month of driving after you pass if you live in the borough, and lessons should include it once the basics are solid — approached progressively, at a quiet time first.
The roads are Walworth Road, the Old Kent Road (A201) and the Peckham corridor. Walworth Road runs south from the Elephant through continuous shops, market stalls around East Street, crossings in quick succession and buses pulling in and out — anticipation driving at walking pace, where the marks and the safety both come from reading pedestrians, not the car in front. The Old Kent Road is wider, faster and more industrial: big junctions, retail park entrances, and lane discipline around the flyover side towards New Cross. Peckham — Rye Lane's bus-and-pedestrian intensity, the High Street, and the roads around Peckham Rye — adds narrow terraces and one of London's busiest shopping streets into the mix. Camberwell, up Denmark Hill past the hospitals, brings steep-ish gradients, ambulance traffic and the Camberwell Green junction tangle. Most of the borough is 20mph, and holding exactly that — neither creeping over nor crawling — while everything happens around you is a genuine skill.
Then there is the driving your test actually samples, and lessons must take you there deliberately. The runs from Southwark to your test centre are themselves lessons. South-west to Mitcham, the route crosses Streatham and the A236 corridor past Mitcham Common to the industrial-estate roads around Redhouse Road. South-east to Bromley, the run goes down through Peckham and Nunhead or via the South Circular side: the A205 through Catford, with the Catford gyratory's one-way multi-lane system, then the A2212 Burnt Ash Lane and A21 corridors that Bromley routes use, with the residential Grove Park and Downham streets where manoeuvres happen. An instructor who only ever drives you around Walworth and the Elephant is preparing you for half your test.
Timing matters. The Elephant, Walworth Road and the Old Kent Road are slow from early morning to evening, hospital traffic shapes Denmark Hill all day, and the South Circular queues hard in both peaks. Practise in those conditions before test day, not just on a quiet Sunday.
Practising around Southwark between lessons
Private practice with a legally qualified supervising driver, in a car insured for you and displaying L plates, works best in Southwark when you split it between borough driving and test-area driving — and keep early practice to the borough's southern half, leaving London Bridge and Borough for later.
Start in the residential south: East Dulwich, Nunhead, the streets around Peckham Rye and Dulwich Village, where 20mph discipline, meeting traffic and manoeuvres between parked cars can be built without the Elephant's pressure. Then work Walworth Road, Camberwell and the Old Kent Road at busier times for bus lanes, crossings and junction patience.
Make the run to your booked centre a regular session, not a one-off: south-west through Streatham to Mitcham Common and the Redhouse Road estate, or south through Peckham and Nunhead or across to the South Circular, around Catford and the gyratory, then on to Burnt Ash Lane and the residential streets of Grove Park, so that both the journey and the test area are familiar. The DVSA no longer publishes official test routes, so treat any route list as a guide to road types, not a promise.

Choosing an instructor in Southwark
When you compare driving instructors in Southwark, check the badge in the windscreen. A green badge means a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). A pink badge means a trainee Potential Driving Instructor (PDI), teaching legally while still qualifying under supervision. Knowing which you have booked helps you judge experience fairly.
Ask about Mitcham and Bromley specifically. Does the instructor work regularly from the Redhouse Road centre at Mitcham, or from Burnt Ash Lane at Bromley? Will lessons cover both halves of your preparation — Southwark's own streets, the Elephant, Walworth Road and the Old Kent Road, and the Mitcham Common and A236 corridor or the Catford, South Circular and Bromley test areas — as a planned programme, rather than whichever is nearer your home? Ask how you will get to the centre on test day, about manual and automatic, female instructors if you would prefer one, and pickup from your exact address. Our guide to driving schools near me explains the rest of the checklist — lesson structure, progress tracking, mock tests and cancellation terms.
A proper mock matters in Southwark because the real test happens in a different neighbourhood from your lessons. Run it from your booked centre — Mitcham or Bromley — on its main-road corridors with a residential manoeuvre, marked strictly. Ignore any guaranteed-pass promise.

Frequently asked questions
Where do Southwark learners take their driving test?
Most Southwark learners now test at Mitcham driving test centre, Redhouse Road, Mitcham, CR0 3AQ — the nearest practical centre for most Southwark postcodes. Bromley, at 121-123 Burnt Ash Lane, Bromley, BR1 5AB, is the main alternative, especially from the east of the borough, and Morden is a further option. Southwark has a theory test centre but no practical centre, and Hither Green — the centre many Southwark learners used until 2025 — closed on 1 February 2025 and is no longer bookable. Always follow your booking confirmation.
Why is there no test centre in Southwark itself?
The DVSA does not site practical test centres in central London's densest streets. Tests need routes that mix road types and allow the full range of exercises, which is why Southwark learners travel to centres like Mitcham and Bromley on the edge of the inner suburbs. Your theory test, by contrast, can be taken at the theory centre in the borough.
Has Hither Green test centre closed?
Yes. The DVSA stopped carrying out tests at Hither Green, 42-44 Ennersdale Road, SE13 6JD, on 1 February 2025, and moved tests already booked there to nearby centres, including Bromley. There is therefore no current Hither Green pass rate to quote — any directory still showing the centre as open is out of date. For the centres Southwark learners use now, Bromley's pass rate is 52.9% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data) and Morden's is 50.96% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data); we do not quote a rate for Mitcham, because the directory figures for it conflict too widely. The test standard is national and identical everywhere.
Do Mitcham and Bromley tests include faster roads?
Yes. Mitcham routes use the A236 Mitcham Road and Croydon Road corridor and the faster stretches around Mitcham Common, while Bromley routes use the A2212 and A21 alongside residential streets in Grove Park and Downham, so expect lane discipline on multi-lane roads, busy gyratory and roundabout systems, and correct slowing for 20mph and 30mph areas. Motorway driving is not part of the car test.
Can I learn in an automatic in Southwark?
Yes. We offer manual and automatic lessons in Southwark. An automatic pass gives you an automatic-only licence, while a manual pass covers both. Many central London learners choose automatic because so much borough driving is stop-start — the choice is yours, and we will talk it through when you book.
How much do driving lessons in Southwark cost?
See our prices page for current packages and confirm for your postcode when you book. We do not publish a fixed Southwark per-hour price here; as context, our Manchester lessons start from £35 per hour. The theory test is £23 and the practical is £62 on a weekday or £75 at evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
