Moving house? Updating the address on your driving licence is one of those jobs that slides down the to-do list — but it's a legal requirement, not an optional piece of admin. According to GOV.UK, you can be fined up to £1,000 if you do not tell DVLA when your address changes. The good news: changing it is completely free, takes about five minutes online, and you can keep driving while you wait for the new licence.

This guide walks through the online process, the postal alternative, and the other records you need to update at the same time.

Why you must update it Your licence address is the address DVLA uses to contact you — renewal reminders, medical review letters and, where relevant, enforcement notices all go to it. Let it go stale and you risk missing something with real consequences. The duty itself comes from section 99 of the Road Traffic Act 1988: where the name or address on a licence ceases to be correct, the holder must notify DVLA.

The obligation applies to full and provisional licence holders alike, whether or not you own a car, and whether you're renting, buying or moving in with family. There is one sensible exception recognised in DVLA guidance: a genuinely temporary move — for example, a student living away during term time who can still be contacted at their permanent home address — doesn't require an update.

Before you start: what you'll need To change your address online you need:

Your driving licence (the photocard itself) Residency in Great Britain — there's a different process in Northern Ireland, handled by the DVA The addresses you've lived at for the last 3 years Not to be banned from driving Having your National Insurance number and passport number to hand speeds up the identity checks.

The online process, step by step Go to GOV.UK's "change the address on your driving licence" service. Check the address in your browser bar — always apply through the official site, never a lookalike charging a fee. Sign in. If you don't already have sign-in details, you'll create them as part of the process. You may be asked to prove your identity, usually with photo ID such as a passport or the licence itself. Enter your new address and the addresses you've lived at over the last three years. Check the details carefully — a typo'd postcode will send your new licence to the wrong place. Submit. You'll get a confirmation email from DVLA once your application is in. Your new licence is posted to your new address and, according to GOV.UK, should arrive within a week when you apply online. You can legally drive throughout the wait — your entitlement doesn't pause because the card is in the post.

Optional extras at the same time Changing your photo: you can update your licence photo at the same time as your address, which costs £14 (free if you're over 70 or hold a medical short-period licence). You may be able to use the same photo as your passport, or supply a digital photo.

Changing your name at the same time: you can't do this online. If your name has changed as well as your address, you must apply by post, sending the original documents (such as a marriage certificate) that evidence the name change.

Applying by post instead Prefer paper? The process is free by post too:

Get form D1 ("Application for a driving licence") from a Post Office that deals with DVLA — or order it from DVLA. Complete the relevant sections with your new address and details of your old address. Send the form, together with your photocard licence, to the address printed on the form. Wait for the new licence to be posted back — postal applications take around three weeks, longer if DVLA needs to make further checks. Keep a note of your licence number before you post the card — you'll want it if the application is delayed.

Don't forget the other records Your driving licence and your vehicle records are separate DVLA files, and updating one does nothing to the other. When you move, you must also:

Change the address on your vehicle log book (V5C) — a separate free service, with its own potential £1,000 fine for failing to update. Update your vehicle tax Direct Debit, if that's how you pay. Change the address on your personalised registration document (V750 or V778), if you have one. Tell your insurer. Insurance is priced partly on the registered address, and a mismatch between the licence and the policy can cause problems if you ever need to claim. Moving abroad You can't put a foreign address on a British driving licence. If you're leaving Great Britain permanently, GOV.UK directs you to contact the driving licence authority in your new country of residence to arrange driving there instead.

Provisional holders: same process If you're a learner, the rules are identical — the free online service covers provisional licences too. One learner-specific point: the address on your licence matters on test day, because examiners check your licence against the booking. If you've moved mid-learning, update the licence before your practical test date rather than hoping nobody notices. (And if the card itself is lost in the move, our guide to lost provisional licences covers replacements.)

While you're on GOV.UK, it's also worth checking your driving licence number is recorded somewhere safe, and understanding the difference between DVLA and DVSA — licence admin is DVLA; tests and instructors are DVSA. For the bigger picture of how the licence fits into your learning journey, see our guide to how to get your licence and what the licence categories on the back of the card actually mean.

Frequently asked questions How much does it cost to change the address on my driving licence? Nothing. Changing your address is free online and by post. The only optional charge is £14 if you also want to change your photo at the same time.

How long does a new licence take to arrive after an address change? If you apply online, GOV.UK says your licence should arrive within a week. Postal applications take around three weeks.

What happens if I don't update my address? You can be fined up to £1,000, according to GOV.UK. You also risk missing renewal reminders and other official correspondence sent to the old address.

Can I drive while I'm waiting for the new licence? Yes. You can still drive while you're waiting for your new licence — your entitlement is unaffected by the card being in the post.

Does updating my licence update my car's V5C log book too? No. The licence and the vehicle log book are separate records. You must update the V5C separately, and failing to do so carries its own fine of up to £1,000.

Do students need to change their licence address for term time? Not if the move is genuinely temporary and DVLA can still contact you at your permanent address. If you've moved away permanently, update it.
