Driving licence categories: what can you drive?
Understand category B, automatic restrictions, vehicle weights and licence dates before driving a different car or van, with separate Northern Ireland guidance.

A driving-licence category identifies a class of vehicle covered by your entitlement. The category letter alone is not the whole answer: you also need to check whether the entitlement is provisional or full, its dates and any restriction codes. Start with your own record and the current GOV.UK category guide, not the fact that another driver has a similar-looking licence.
For most new car learners, category B is the immediate concern. Other categories matter when moving to motorcycles, larger vehicles, passenger-carrying vehicles or some towing arrangements. This guide explains how to make the check, rather than reproducing every category and exception as an easily outdated list.
Begin with the vehicle you intend to use
“Can I drive a van?” is not specific enough. Identify the actual vehicle, its transmission, maximum authorised mass, seating and any trailer. Then compare those facts with your licence record and the relevant official rules.
Vehicle appearance is unreliable. A vehicle that looks like a large car may have a different weight or seating specification; two similar vans can have different permitted masses. Do not rely only on a rental listing's informal label or an assurance that it is “fine on a normal licence”.
This is also a useful habit when borrowing a car. Confirm whether your licence permits that transmission and whether the insurance covers the proposed use. Being physically able to operate the controls is not the same as being legally entitled and insured to drive.
Category B and the automatic restriction
The current GB category guide distinguishes category B from automatic-only entitlement. For drivers who passed on or after 1 January 1997, it lists up to eight passenger seats and maximum authorised masses of 3,500kg for petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles, or 4,250kg for qualifying zero-emission electric or hydrogen vehicles. Additional conditions and towing limits are on the official page.
Do not reduce that guidance to “all cars under a certain weight”. Check the actual vehicle, the relevant fuel/vehicle conditions and your own entitlement. Older test dates can produce different rights, so a parent's licence is not a reliable model for a newly qualified driver's.
An automatic restriction remains important even when the vehicle is within the relevant category. GOV.UK's restriction-code list identifies code 78 as automatic transmission only. Our automatic-to-manual upgrade guide explains the separate learning and test route if you want to expand that entitlement.
Categories and restriction codes do different jobs
The category describes the vehicle group. A restriction code describes a condition attached to driving. For example, code 01 concerns eyesight correction. A valid category does not cancel the need to meet its associated conditions.
Read the category, dates and codes together. If a row or symbol is unclear, use the official guide rather than assuming that every vehicle picture printed on the card is an entitlement you hold. DVLA's INS57P licence guide explains the card layout and distinguishes category dates from the document's issue information.
Keep the questions separate when seeking help: “What does this code mean?” is different from “How do I add another category?” A precise question is easier for the licensing authority to resolve.
Why maximum authorised mass matters
Maximum authorised mass, or MAM, includes the maximum load the vehicle or trailer can safely carry; it is not simply what an empty vehicle weighs today. GOV.UK's vehicle-weight guide explains the terms and says MAM is listed in the owner's manual and normally on a vehicle plate or sticker.
Suppose you are offered a moving van and told that it will be nearly empty. That does not establish the category you need. Check the specified weight and the applicable licensing rule rather than using the day's light load as a shortcut.
For towing, check the combination as well as each individual vehicle. Licence entitlement and the vehicle manufacturer's permitted towing limits are separate checks. If you cannot establish both, obtain the information before attaching the trailer, not after starting the journey.
Larger vehicles and motorcycles need their own check
The official category guide separates motorcycle groups, goods-vehicle groups and passenger-vehicle groups. A car pass should not be treated as unrestricted permission to ride any motorcycle, drive any lorry or take charge of a minibus.
If your plans change, use the official guidance on adding categories to identify the appropriate route. Training, provisional entitlement, tests and medical requirements can differ by category. Avoid booking a course based only on its marketing title without checking the qualification it is designed to obtain.
For example, “I need to drive a larger vehicle for work” should become a specific description of its weight, seating and use before choosing training. This prevents paying for the wrong course or assuming a car-lesson provider offers a specialist qualification it has not advertised.
Northern Ireland is not an identical category checklist
GOV.UK explicitly directs NI licence holders to separate guidance. Use nidirect's category and minimum-age information and your DVA record. NI guidance includes its own conditions for car, automatic, trailer and zero-emission entitlements.
Do not transfer a GB towing entitlement, weight exception or age rule to an NI licence without checking. If you have exchanged a licence or moved between jurisdictions, use the record and guidance relevant to your current licence rather than a remembered entitlement from another document.
A short check before driving something different
- Identify the specific vehicle and any trailer.
- Check your current licence record, including provisional/full status and restriction codes.
- Compare the specification with the correct jurisdiction's official category rules.
- Confirm insurance and any employer, hire or operator requirements separately.
- Resolve uncertainty before driving, especially around weights, seating or specialist use.

Understanding the licence categories helps you choose the right next step, but a general article cannot confirm an individual person's entitlement to a particular vehicle without the relevant record and specifications.
