Where is your driving licence number?

Admin4 min read

Find your GB or Northern Ireland driving licence number, distinguish it from the issue number and check code, and troubleshoot forms without sharing too much.

On a photocard licence, look for field 5 on the front. A Great Britain driver number has 16 characters, while a Northern Ireland driver number has eight digits. The small licence issue number is a separate item: do not automatically add it to the driver number when completing a form. DVLA's licence guide, INS57P, explains the GB layout, and DVA's photocard guide explains the NI card.

Finding the right number is usually straightforward; confusion begins when a form asks for a different reference or expects the other jurisdiction's format. This guide helps you identify the requested information without guessing or sending a photograph of the whole licence unnecessarily.

Read the label before copying the number

A licence contains several dates, categories and codes. A test confirmation contains other references again. Before typing, read the field label and its help text.

  • Driving-licence or driver number: identifies your driving record.
  • Licence issue number: relates to the issued licence document and is separate from the GB driver number.
  • Booking reference: identifies an appointment or transaction.
  • Theory-pass certificate number: relates to your theory-test result.
  • Check code: is generated to allow an authorised licence-record check; it is not your permanent driver number.

These labels are not interchangeable. If a website rejects the driver number, replacing it with a booking reference may satisfy a length check while still identifying the wrong thing. Resolve the meaning of the field first.

Why your GB number can include the digit 9

DVLA's guide explains that the GB number contains elements based on your name and date of birth, together with security characters. A short surname or a missing second initial can involve the digit 9. The issue number shown separately is not part of those 16 characters.

You do not need to decode or reconstruct the number to use it. Copy the issued value carefully. Trying to build it from a surname and birthday can introduce errors and cannot reliably supply the security characters.

This also explains why a form should not be completed from a casual guess about what somebody's licence number “must be”. If you are helping another person, let them check the source document and control the disclosure of their information.

Northern Ireland uses a different format

DVA's photocard guide identifies field 5 as the unique eight-digit NI driver number. It also confirms that the NI licence still has a photocard and paper counterpart. Do not discard that counterpart based on advice about the different GB system.

If an online form insists on a 16-character GB format, first check whether you have opened the correct service for an NI licence. Adding letters or zeros to make an eight-digit number fit does not convert it into a GB number.

For a school or commercial form, ask the provider how it supports your licence type. For a government task, follow the issuing authority's instructions and the service's jurisdiction notice. This is especially important after moving or exchanging a licence; use the actual record, not assumptions based on where you currently live.

What to check when an online form rejects it

Work through a small set of checks rather than repeatedly submitting slightly different versions:

  1. Confirm that the form is asking for the driver number, not another reference.
  2. Check whether the service is intended for GB or Northern Ireland licences.
  3. Compare each character with the current document, including letters and digits that look similar.
  4. Follow the form's instructions on spaces and formatting, and remove accidental spaces introduced by copying.
  5. Check whether other requested details match the official record.

The DVLA view-record service, for example, asks for the licence number, National Insurance number and postcode on the licence. A rejected lookup is not necessarily proof that the driver number alone is wrong.

If the problem persists, use the official support route or contact the form owner. Do not send a full identity document to a stranger offering to “fix” a government record through social media.

What if the licence is lost?

Not remembering the number is different from losing the document, although the two often happen together. If the licence is missing, use the official replacement service and follow its identification requirements rather than attempting to generate a number yourself.

Our lost provisional licence guide covers the wider decisions, including an approaching test. Knowing the number does not automatically remove the requirement to bring specified documents to an appointment.

If your first licence has not yet been issued, do not invent a number to complete a lesson enquiry. Explain the situation to the school and check what can be arranged before your entitlement is confirmed.

Share only what the task needs

For an authorised GB record check, the official checker uses a check code and the last eight characters of your licence number. That is different from asking for your login credentials or National Insurance number.

Verify who is asking and why. A picture of the entire card reveals more than the number alone, so ask whether a narrower disclosure will complete the task. Never post the licence publicly to celebrate receiving it or to ask strangers why a form is failing; DVLA's guide specifically warns against posting licence images online.

Before booking lessons

Keep the current licence accessible, read each form carefully and clarify uncertainty before submitting personal data. You can explore our driving courses and contact Learn and Drive about starting tuition. If an instructor needs to verify entitlement, ask for the appropriate process rather than confusing a licence number with proof that every insurance and supervision requirement has been met.
