Lost your provisional driving licence? What to do next

Lost your provisional licence? Find the official replacement route, check what to do before a theory or practical test, and keep your lesson plans organised.

If you have lost your provisional driving licence, use DVLA’s replacement process rather than applying for your first licence again. The official online service covers provisional as well as full licences. The replacement fee shown on GOV.UK when checked on 16 October 2026 is £20; confirm the current amount before paying through the official replacement service.

The most urgent question is whether you have a theory or practical test approaching. Replacing a card and meeting the identification requirements for a test are separate matters. An application confirmation is not a substitute for checking what you must bring on the day.

This guide concerns DVLA licences in Great Britain. Northern Ireland has a separate service, linked from the official guidance. Do not use a different jurisdiction’s process simply because its search result appears first.

First, establish what has happened

Make a short, practical search of the places you last used the licence: a document folder, wallet, bag or a recent appointment. If a venue might have it, contact the venue through a verified number. Avoid posting a photograph of the licence or your full licence number publicly while asking for help.

If the licence was stolen, GOV.UK advises contacting the police. Follow any additional advice relevant to other stolen items. A missing wallet may also involve bank cards or other documents, but replacing the driving licence does not automatically address those separate risks.

Once you decide a replacement is needed, save the official application confirmation. Make a note of upcoming lessons and tests so you can deal with the most time-sensitive arrangements first. There is no benefit in discovering the identity-document problem at the test-centre entrance.

Use the replacement route, not a new-learner application

The first provisional licence guide is for people applying for their initial entitlement. Losing the physical card is a different administrative problem. Use the replacement service and answer its identity and eligibility questions accurately.

Read the official form before gathering documents. The online service may ask you to sign in and prove your identity. Follow the instructions it actually gives rather than a copied checklist that might be out of date. If your circumstances prevent an online application, follow the alternative routes linked from GOV.UK.

Check the address and other details carefully before submitting. If your name, address, entitlement or medical circumstances have changed, do not assume a straightforward lost-card replacement resolves everything. Use the relevant DVLA guidance or contact DVLA for the correct process.

Avoid paying a third-party site just because it appears above the official result in a search. Check the address in your browser and the fee before entering personal information. Keep your confirmation somewhere secure, not in an open social-media conversation.

If your practical driving test is soon

DVSA requires the appropriate driving licence at the practical test. Its what-to-take guidance says to obtain a replacement if yours is lost, allows for arrival taking up to 15 days and advises rearranging if the new licence will not arrive in time. Attending without the required items can mean cancellation without a refund.

The general online replacement page says a licence should arrive within a week, but do not treat that as a guaranteed test-day delivery promise. The test guidance explicitly recommends allowing more time. Decide using your actual booking date and the current official instructions, not the shortest estimate you have seen.

Tell your instructor promptly. There may also be a lesson, test-car or collection booking to discuss under its own terms. Changing the DVSA appointment does not automatically cancel arrangements with the school, and cancelling a school booking does not change the DVSA test.

Check the current official change or cancellation rules before acting. Keep a record of any completed change and confirm the revised arrangements with your instructor. Do not assume that a screenshot of the lost card, a passport alone or a payment receipt will be accepted instead.

If your theory test is soon

Check the official theory-test identification requirements. For a GB photocard licence, you need to bring the photocard; the rules differ for paper and Northern Ireland licences. The guidance explains what to do when the licence is missing and warns that the test is cancelled without a refund if you do not bring the correct documents.

Review the appointment and replacement timing immediately rather than hoping the test centre can make an exception. Keep revision going while you resolve the paperwork, but separate revision readiness from the ability to satisfy the identification requirement.

If you move an appointment, update your calendar and travel plans as well. A simple checklist with the new date, centre, arrival instructions and required documents can prevent a second avoidable problem.

What about booked driving lessons?

Contact the instructor before the lesson and explain the situation. Ask what evidence they need to check your current entitlement and whether the booking can go ahead under their procedures. Do not assume that losing a physical card cancels your entitlement, or that submitting a replacement application proves you are legally entitled to drive.

If there is uncertainty about the validity or status of your entitlement, resolve it with DVLA before driving. Insurance, supervision and other learner requirements still matter independently of the replacement application. This article does not authorise driving in an individual case.

If a practical session needs to move, ask whether the time can be used appropriately for theory or lesson planning and what the agreed terms allow. There is no automatic promise of a substitute session or a refund; get the arrangement confirmed rather than relying on an assumption.

When the replacement arrives

Check that the new licence details are correct and keep it in a consistent, secure place. Review your next booking’s document requirements while you have the card in front of you. That is especially useful if the loss happened during a busy period with several appointments.

If the original turns up after you have applied for or received a replacement, DVLA instructs you to return the old licence with an explanation. Use the address in the current official replacement guidance. Do not keep both cards in circulation as interchangeable identification.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a photo of the licence at a test?

Do not rely on a photograph. Follow the official document list for your particular test and licence type. Confirm any exceptional situation directly with the relevant testing service before travelling.

Is losing the theory pass certificate the same problem?

No. DVSA’s practical-test guidance says the examiner can check the theory pass if the certificate is missing. That does not remove the separate requirement to bring the correct driving licence.

How do I keep learning while sorting this out?

Sign in to our learning resources for structured revision and make a list of questions for your next lesson. For changes to a Learn and Drive booking, contact the school with the booking details, avoiding unnecessary copies of identity documents. You can review course information once the paperwork and timing are clear.
