Southampton is a port city, and its driving has a port city's character: HGVs moving to and from the docks, cruise and ferry traffic swelling the roads on sailing days, a river crossing on the Itchen Bridge, and ring-road junctions that stay busy from early morning to early evening. Driving lessons in Southampton UK learners take therefore cover an unusually complete mix — city-centre one-ways, suburban estates, dual carriageways and the approaches to the M27 and M271.

Car tests in the city now run from a single practical test centre, Maybush in the west (the old Forest Hills centre in the east has closed), and a driving school in Southampton will usually build your later lessons around the roads Maybush routes actually use — worth doing deliberately rather than hoping for the best on roads you have never practised.

Learn and Drive covers Southampton: our instructors offer door-to-door pickup, so your lesson starts at your home, work or college — no travelling to a meeting point. Pickup for an exact postcode is confirmed at booking. See our wider coverage on our areas we cover page.

Southampton driving test centre

Southampton's car tests run from one DVSA practical test centre, in the west of the city.

Southampton (Maybush) Driving Test Centre is at Green Lane, Maybush, Southampton, Hampshire, SO16 9FP, just off Romsey Road (A3057) in the west of the city. Its pass rate is 50.3% (drivingtestexpert.com, from DVSA data). Routes use Romsey Road, Winchester Road, Hill Lane, Tebourba Way and Coxford Road, through Shirley, Lordswood, Millbrook and Lordshill, with faster sections on the A33 and A35 and independent driving that can head towards the M271 corridor.

One change to be aware of: the city's second centre, Southampton (Forest Hills) at Forest Hills Drive, SO18 2FY, has closed permanently — the building is now a former DVSA site being let commercially, and the nearest alternative named by the DVSA-data services is Maybush. If you live on the east side (Bitterne, Woolston, Sholing), your test will still be at Maybush, so build some west-side practice into your later lessons rather than only driving your own neighbourhood. The eastern roads still matter for everyday driving skill — they just are not where your examiner will start. The practical test costs £62 on weekdays and £75 on evenings and weekends, and theory (£23) must be passed before you can book. Nationally, average waits were around 22 weeks (National Audit Office, September 2025), so book in good time.

The local driving that matters in Southampton

Docks and HGV traffic. Southampton's port generates constant lorry movements, particularly along the Western Approach, Millbrook Road and towards Dock Gate junctions. Learners need to give HGVs space, never sit in a lorry's blind spot at a roundabout, and expect slow-moving freight traffic around the port and the Redbridge area. Maybush routes meet this world quickly via the A35 and A33 corridors.

The Itchen Bridge and the eastern approaches. The Itchen Bridge links the city centre with Woolston and the east side of the river, and its approaches — including the busy junctions around Northam and Bitterne — are a regular feature of eastern Southampton driving. Lane discipline on the bridge approaches and at the Bitterne junctions is exactly the kind of driving examiners reward when it is calm and planned early — and eastern learners will cross the river regularly on the way to Maybush-side practice.

Romsey Road and the hospital area. Maybush routes start on Romsey Road (A3057), where limits step between 30 and 40 mph and traffic serves Southampton General Hospital. The Coxford Road and A35 yellow-box junctions punish anyone who follows the car in front into a blocked box; waiting behind the line until your exit is clear is the test-standard approach.

Shirley, Hill Lane and the city centre. Shirley's shopping streets bring crossings, parked cars and buses in quick succession, while Hill Lane and the A33 into the centre add multi-lane roundabouts and one-way sections near the station and St Mary's. On cruise turnaround days and match days at St Mary's Stadium, allow for heavier traffic and more pedestrians than the same streets carry midweek.

Faster roads. Both centres reach dual carriageways — the A33, A35 and A27 corridors — where merging, lane discipline and making progress at the limit are assessed, alongside residential 20 and 30 mph streets in Lordshill, Lordswood and Bitterne Park.

Practising around Southampton between lessons

Private practice must be legal practice. Your supervisor must be at least 21 and have held a full licence for the car's category for at least three years. The car needs insurance covering you as a learner and L plates front and rear, and you need your provisional licence. Learners may only drive on motorways with an approved driving instructor in a dual-controlled car, so M27 practice belongs in lessons.

Southampton offers good graduated practice. Start on residential streets in your own area — Lordshill, Sholing, Bitterne Park or Shirley — for manoeuvres and meeting traffic. Add the A27 and A33 corridors for dual-carriageway confidence once your instructor agrees, and supervised crossings of the Itchen Bridge to get used to its approaches in normal traffic. Keep clear of dock-gate peaks and stadium event traffic until your hazard perception is well established; they are excellent final preparation, poor first practice.

Run theory study alongside: the theory test costs £23, and Learn and Drive learners get free theory practice — more than 6,500 practice questions, mock tests in DVSA format, 3D hazard perception practice and a 178 road-sign library on the site and app.

Choosing an instructor in Southampton

Look for the badge in the windscreen first. A green octagonal badge means a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). A pink triangular badge means a trainee instructor (PDI) teaching under a licence while qualifying. Both are legal; only one is fully qualified, and you can check any instructor on the GOV.UK register.

Then ask local questions. Do they teach properly around Maybush, the city's test centre — and if you live on the east side, will lessons still cover your side of the city as well? Do they offer manual and automatic? Will they pick you up from home, work or college? Our guide to driving schools near me explains the full set of checks to make before booking with any school.
