Driving lessons in Norwich with door-to-door pickup and free theory practice. Both test centres, local routes and honest pricing explained.

Norwich is a fine city with an awkward street plan for learners: a medieval core of narrow lanes and one-way streets, wrapped in a busy inner ring road, then modern suburbs, business parks and fast dual carriageways — the A47 Southern Bypass and the A1270 Broadland Northway — with open Norfolk countryside minutes beyond them. A Norwich test can move from a tight city junction to a 70mph slip road to a rural lane with agricultural traffic in a single drive. If you are searching for driving lessons Norwich, driving school Norwich or Norwich driving options, the most useful thing you can do is understand which of the city's two test centres you are aiming at, because they produce very different tests.

Learn and Drive covers Norwich: our instructors offer door-to-door pickup, so your lesson starts at your home, work or college — no travelling to a meeting point. Pickup for an exact postcode is confirmed at booking. We are headquartered in Manchester and have no Norwich office; lessons simply take place on Norwich roads, with an instructor who builds your tuition around your chosen test centre. Manual and automatic lessons are available, female instructors are available, and intensive courses are available. Learners also get free theory practice: over 6,500 practice questions, mock tests in DVSA format, 3D hazard perception practice and a 178-sign road-sign library.

Norwich driving test centre

Norwich has two car practical test centres, and the choice between them matters.

Norwich (Peachman Way) is at Plot 16A, Peachman Way, Broadland Business Park, Thorpe St Andrew, Norwich, Norfolk, NR7 0WE, on the eastern side of the city. Its pass rate is 61.72% as of 2026 (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data). Routes lean on the business park, Thorpe St Andrew, the A47 and the outer ring roads.

Norwich (Jupiter Road) is at Jupiter Road, Hellesdon, Norwich, Norfolk, NR6 6SS, to the north-west, closer to the city. Its pass rate is 42.20% in 2024/25 (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data). Routes here are more inner-city in character, with denser junctions and residential streets.

That gap does not mean one centre has kinder examiners — every examiner marks to the same standard. It reflects the roads: Jupiter Road routes throw more complex urban driving at you, while Peachman Way routes include more higher-speed and business-park driving. Book the centre your lessons have prepared you for, not simply the one with the higher figure. The practical test costs £62 on weekdays and £75 in evenings and at weekends; the theory test costs £23 and is taken separately, at the theory centre on Surrey Street in the city centre. Nationally, practical test waits averaged around 22 weeks (NAO, September 2025), so plan your booking early.

The local driving that matters in Norwich

The A47 and its interchanges. From Peachman Way especially, expect the A47 Southern Bypass: joining at a speed that matches traffic, holding lane position and a safe gap at 60–70mph, then settling promptly into lower limits when you leave. The Postwick Interchange (A47/A1042/A1270) is a large, multi-level junction with spiral markings and traffic lights — read the approach markings well back and hold your lane through it. Further west, Thickthorn Interchange, where the A47 meets the A11, carries fast-moving traffic and multiple slip roads.

Broadland Northway and the ring roads. The A1270 Broadland Northway and the outer ring road bring sustained roundabout work. The Heartsease roundabout (A1042/A147) is busy and multi-lane; the Boundary roundabout near the A140 features on Jupiter Road routes. Pick a lane once, early, and hold it — drifting and late changes are where faults accumulate.

Inner-city Norwich. The inner ring road (A147), Grapes Hill, and the one-way streets and narrow lanes around the old city test positioning, pedestrian awareness and patience. Around the Riverside and Thorpe areas you will meet parked cars, cyclists and pedestrians stepping out between vehicles.

The rural fringe. East and north of the city, routes can reach national-speed-limit country roads with blind bends, no pavements and occasional tractors, particularly at harvest. Appropriate speed there often means well below the limit — judgement, not just compliance, is being assessed.

Practising around Norwich between lessons

To practise privately you must be insured as a learner on the car, display L plates, and be accompanied by a supervisor who is over 21 and has held a full licence for that type of car for at least three years. Motorway practice is only allowed with an approved driving instructor in a dual-controlled car.

Build your Norwich practice in layers. Start with manoeuvres and meeting traffic on quieter residential streets in areas such as Hellesdon or Thorpe St Andrew, then practise ring-road roundabouts at quieter times before attempting Heartsease or Postwick in the rush hour. Add A47 slip-road work only when your supervisor is confident you can match traffic speed, and use the rural roads beyond the Northway to develop speed judgement on bends. Practising near your booked test centre, at a similar time of day to your test, is especially valuable.

Choosing an instructor in Norwich

Look for the badge: green means a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI); pink means a trainee instructor (PDI) teaching legally while working towards full qualification. Then ask the Norwich-specific questions: which test centre do they mainly teach for — Peachman Way or Jupiter Road — and will your lessons cover that centre's roads? Do they offer manual and automatic tuition? (Remember, an automatic licence does not let you drive a manual car.) Is door-to-door pickup included?

Our guide to choosing between driving schools near you sets out the full checklist. With Learn and Drive, female instructors are available on request, and your instructor will plan lessons around the centre you have booked.

Frequently asked questions

Which Norwich test centre should I book?

There are two: Norwich (Peachman Way), NR7 0WE, with a pass rate of 61.72% as of 2026, and Norwich (Jupiter Road), NR6 6SS, at 42.20% in 2024/25 (both passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data). Book the centre your lessons have covered — familiarity with the local roads matters more than the headline rate.

Where do I take my theory test in Norwich?

Theory and practical tests are at different sites. The theory test centre is on Surrey Street in the city centre, while the practical centres are at Peachman Way and Jupiter Road. The theory test costs £23.

How long does learning to drive in Norwich take?

It depends on lesson frequency and private practice. Weekly lessons plus legal practice on the ring roads, the A47 and residential streets will normally build test-ready skills faster than lessons alone. Ask your instructor for a progress estimate after a few lessons.

Can I learn in an automatic in Norwich?

Yes, we offer manual and automatic lessons. Bear in mind an automatic licence only covers automatics, while a manual licence covers both — worth weighing up if you are unsure which car you will drive after passing.

Will my instructor pick me up at home in Norwich?

Yes. Learn and Drive covers Norwich with door-to-door pickup from home, work or college, confirmed for your exact postcode when you book. Call 07966 587877 to check.

How much are driving lessons in Norwich?

Lesson prices vary by instructor and lesson type — see our prices page for current options. Separately, the DVSA charges £23 for the theory test and £62 for a weekday practical test (£75 evenings and weekends).
