Driving Lessons in Aberdeen: Two Test Centres Explained
Driving lessons in Aberdeen with door-to-door pickup and free theory practice. North and South test centres, local routes and prices.

Aberdeen asks more of a learner than most cities. It is a working port and energy-industry city, so your lessons share the road with harbour lorries and shift-change traffic; it sits on the North Sea coast, so haar (sea fog), high winds and low sun are real driving conditions, not theory questions; and its two test centres sit at opposite ends of the city on completely different road networks. Throw in genuine hills in the southern suburbs and 70mph dual carriageway on the A90 Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (AWPR), and you have a test that rewards broad, honest preparation. If you are searching for driving lessons Aberdeen, driving schools Aberdeen UK or driving instructors Aberdeen, start by deciding which end of the city you will test in.
Learn and Drive covers Aberdeen: our instructors offer door-to-door pickup, so your lesson starts at your home, work or college — no travelling to a meeting point. Pickup for an exact postcode is confirmed at booking. We are based in Manchester and do not claim an Aberdeen office; tuition happens on Aberdeen's roads, structured around your test centre. Manual and automatic lessons are available, female instructors are available, and intensive courses are available. You also get free theory practice: more than 6,500 practice questions, mock tests in DVSA format, 3D hazard perception practice and a library of 178 road signs.
Aberdeen driving test centre
Aberdeen has two car practical test centres.
Aberdeen North is at Cloverhill Road, Bridge of Don, Aberdeen, AB23 8FE, north of the River Don. There is no car park at the centre itself, male, female and disabled toilets are available, and wheelchair access is provided. The DVSA asks car candidates to keep to the one-way system around the building, meet the examiner at the VIC waiting room, and notes that no practising is allowed on site.
Aberdeen South (Cove) is at Moss Road, Gateway Business Park, Nigg, Aberdeen, AB12 3GQ, on the southern edge of the city near Cove Bay. Its pass rate is 52.41% as of 2026 (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data).
Both centres mark to the same national standard; the difference is the roads each one uses, covered below. The practical test costs £62 on weekdays and £75 in evenings and at weekends, and the theory test — taken at a separate centre — costs £23. Nationally, practical test waiting times averaged around 22 weeks (NAO, September 2025), so once your instructor says you are nearly ready, book promptly and keep up regular lessons while you wait.
The local driving that matters in Aberdeen
From Bridge of Don (North). Routes work through Danestone, Middleton Park and Bridge of Don itself, and out towards Dyce and Bucksburn. The fast element is the Parkway and Ellon Road (A90): large, multi-lane roundabouts, dual carriageway at 50–70mph and AWPR slip roads where you must build speed properly and merge with confidence. Then the test flips completely — 20mph and 30mph residential zones with traffic calming, school traffic on Scotstown Road, and manoeuvres on estate streets. Heading towards the city, King Street adds bus lanes, cycle provision and university traffic.
From Cove (South). Wellington Road (A956) is the spine of most routes: multi-lane, congested, and heavy with HGVs serving the harbour and the Altens and Tullos industrial estates. Wellington Circle is the roundabout local instructors talk about most — get your lane sorted early and do not sit in a lorry's blind spot. Routes also take in Cove Bay, Nigg, Torry and Kincorth, where the ground rises and falls, junctions sit on gradients and hill starts are likely, plus Charleston and AWPR junctions for high-speed merging. The swing from 70mph dual carriageway to a 20mph residential street inside a couple of minutes is where speed faults happen.
Weather and coast. At both centres, expect to adjust for wind on exposed stretches, spray, and haar rolling in off the North Sea. Examiners do not fail you for the weather; they expect you to adapt your speed and following distance to what you can actually see.
Practising around Aberdeen between lessons
Private practice must be legal: L plates displayed, learner insurance in place, and a supervisor who is over 21 and has held a full licence for the car type for at least three years. You may only practise on a motorway with an approved driving instructor in a dual-controlled car — note the AWPR is a dual carriageway, not a motorway, but only use its slip roads in private practice when your supervisor agrees you can match traffic speed safely.
Match your practice to your centre. North-side learners should rehearse Parkway and Ellon Road roundabouts at quieter times first, then in commuting traffic, and drill the drop from dual carriageway speeds into Danestone's 20mph zones. South-side learners should get comfortable with Wellington Road in weekday commercial traffic, practise hill starts on real gradients in Kincorth or Torry, and rehearse leaving generous space around lorries in Altens. Regular short sessions beat occasional long ones.
Choosing an instructor in Aberdeen
Check the windscreen badge: green means a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI); pink means a trainee Potential Driving Instructor (PDI), legally teaching while completing qualification. In Aberdeen, also ask which centre the instructor mainly teaches for — North and South routes barely overlap — whether they cover harbour and industrial traffic or mainly suburban roads, and whether manual or automatic tuition suits you. An automatic licence restricts you to automatics; a manual licence covers both. Confirm door-to-door pickup from your address.
Our guide to choosing between driving schools near you covers the wider checklist, including what to ask before buying a block of lessons. Female instructors are available with Learn and Drive on request.

Frequently asked questions
Which Aberdeen test centre should I choose?
Aberdeen North (Cloverhill Road, Bridge of Don, AB23 8FE) suits learners on the north side and uses the Parkway, Ellon Road and the northern suburbs. Aberdeen South (Cove) (Moss Road, Gateway Business Park, Nigg, AB12 3GQ) uses Wellington Road, the industrial estates and the southern suburbs, and has a pass rate of 52.41% as of 2026 (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data). Choose the centre your lessons have covered.
Is Aberdeen a difficult place to pass your test?
The roads are demanding — fast dual carriageways, big roundabouts, heavy lorry traffic and coastal weather — but marking is the same national standard as everywhere else. Preparation on the specific roads your centre uses is what makes the difference.
Can I learn in an automatic in Aberdeen?
Yes. We offer manual and automatic lessons. Remember that passing in an automatic gives you an automatic-only licence, while a manual pass lets you drive both.
Do you offer door-to-door pickup in Aberdeen?
Yes. Learn and Drive covers Aberdeen with pickup from home, work or college, confirmed for your exact postcode at booking. Call 07966 587877 to check your address.
How much do driving lessons in Aberdeen cost?
Prices vary by instructor and lesson type, so current options are listed on our prices page. The DVSA test fees are the same nationally: £23 for the theory test and £62 for a weekday practical test (£75 evenings and weekends).
What should I watch out for on Aberdeen test routes?
Depending on your centre: lane discipline on the Parkway and Wellington Circle, merging at speed on AWPR slip roads, resetting to 20mph in residential zones after dual carriageway driving, hill starts in the southern suburbs, and giving HGVs proper space around Altens and the harbour approaches.
