Catford's nearest test centre used to be less than a mile away. Hither Green, just east of Catford in the same borough of Lewisham, closed on 1 February 2025 — and a striking amount of the internet still has not noticed, still listing it as Catford's centre and still describing its routes through Catford itself. If you are looking for driving lessons in Catford, start from the corrected picture our Lewisham guide sets out: your test is now at Bromley, Sidcup or West Wickham, and your lessons have two jobs — Catford's own formidable driving, centred on the South Circular and the gyratory, and proper familiarity with the centre you have actually booked. This guide is Catford-specific: the Lewisham guide covers the borough as a whole, this one covers SE6.

Learn and Drive covers Catford: our instructors offer door-to-door pickup, so your lesson starts at your home, work or college — no travelling to a meeting point. Exact pickup for your postcode is confirmed when you book, whether you are in Catford town centre, Rushey Green, Bellingham side, Hither Green side, Catford South or towards Forest Hill and Sydenham. We offer manual and automatic lessons, female instructors are available, and intensive courses are available for learners working to a deadline.

Catford driving test centre — Hither Green closed in 2025; Bromley is where Catford learners test now

Hither Green driving test centre was at 42-44 Ennersdale Road, Hither Green, London, SE13 6JD, under a mile east of Catford, and for years its routes ran through Catford — the gyratory, Catford Road and Brownhill Road all featured. It is closed. In an official DVSA bulletin the agency announced: from 1 February 2025, DVSA will no longer carry out driving tests at Hither Green, citing issues affecting the safety and quality of tests there — inadequate road environments, logistical constraints and repetitive routes. Tests already booked from that date were moved to nearby centres, including Bromley. Hither Green does not appear on the DVSA's current list of London test centres, and no test can be booked there. Directories still presenting it as Catford's live centre — some still quoting it as under a mile away, which was once true — are out of date.

Catford learners now test primarily at Bromley (London), at 121-123 Burnt Ash Lane, Bromley, BR1 5AB — roughly three miles south-east of Catford and the centre the DVSA itself named when moving Hither Green tests. That address is consistent across DVSA-derived listings and centre directories, and matches our published Bromley and Lewisham guides. The pass rate at Bromley (London) is 52.9% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data).

The alternatives, consistent with our Lewisham guide, are Sidcup (London), at 2 Crayside, Five Arches Business Estate, Maidstone Road, Sidcup, DA14 5AG, with a pass rate of 58.7% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data), and West Wickham (London), at 56 Glebe Way, West Wickham, BR4 0RL, with a pass rate of 51.60% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data). From Catford, Bromley is the natural first choice — the run south down the A21 Bromley Road corridor is direct — while Sidcup suits learners towards the Hither Green and Lee side when Bromley dates are scarce.

We do not quote a pass rate for Hither Green, and you should be suspicious of anyone who does: the centre is closed, so no current rate can exist. The standard at Bromley, Sidcup and West Wickham is the national standard, identical everywhere. You must have passed your theory test before booking a practical. Nationally the theory test costs £23 and the practical costs £62 on a weekday or £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Waits are still long nationally — the National Audit Office reported an average wait of around 22 weeks in September 2025. Check your booking confirmation for the definitive centre and address; since February 2025 it should never say Hither Green.

The local driving that matters in Catford

Catford driving is dominated by one junction system: the gyratory, where the South Circular (A205) meets the A21 at Rushey Green in a one-way, multi-lane circulation past the town hall, the Broadway Theatre and the Catford Centre shops. Lane discipline has to be early and committed — you choose your lane for the South Circular east or west, for Bromley Road south or for the town centre, well before the system itself, because mid-gyratory corrections are where Catford driving punishes learners. Buses, taxis and pedestrians crossing to the stations — Catford and Catford Bridge sit either side of the system — complete a junction that teaches anticipation as well as any in south-east London.

The corridors out of it are the second theme. South Circular west towards Forest Hill and Dulwich is a residential arterial of parked bays, side turnings and changing speed character; east towards Lee and Eltham it opens out but keeps its bus lanes and crossing-heavy parades. The A21 Bromley Road runs south through Bellingham towards Bromley itself — which is also, usefully, your road to your test centre — while Brownhill Road climbs east out of Catford towards Hither Green and Lee, a sustained gradient where manual learners meet hill starts at side turnings and everyone practises speed control coming down. The Ravensbourne river corridor shapes the local geography here: roads dip towards Catford Bridge and the river, and the streets around Ladywell Fields and the Ravensbourne side are tighter and quieter than the gyratory suggests.

The third theme is the residential Catford behind the corridors: the Corbett Estate streets and the terraces towards Hither Green, Bellingham's parades and estates, and the roads around Mountsfield Park. Parked cars on both sides, 20mph limits, school traffic and meeting situations on streets where two cars cannot pass — this is where manoeuvres and gap judgement are actually learned, and it remains excellent practice even though the examiner no longer starts a mile away.

Timing matters. The gyratory and the South Circular queue hard in both peaks, the A21 corridor south is a commuter artery, and Bellingham and the town centre tighten at school times. Practise in those conditions before test day.

Practising around Catford between lessons

Private practice with a legally qualified supervising driver, in a car insured for you and displaying L plates, works best in Catford when you split it between home driving and test-centre driving — the second is non-negotiable now that the test has moved.

Start on the residential streets: the Corbett Estate, the Hither Green side and around Mountsfield Park, where 20mph discipline, meeting traffic and manoeuvres between parked cars can be built without gyratory pressure. Then work the gyratory itself at progressively busier times, the Brownhill Road climb in both directions, and the South Circular in both directions, until lane commitment is routine.

Make the run to Bromley a regular session: south on the A21 and Bromley Road side to Burnt Ash Lane, then time on Bromley's own streets — the A2212 bus lanes and Grove Park residential roads — until they feel like home roads. If you have booked Sidcup instead, practise the eastward run and the A20 bypass side. Between drives, use our free theory practice — 6,500+ questions, DVSA-format mock tests, 3D hazard perception practice and 178 road signs. The DVSA no longer publishes official test routes, so treat any route list as a guide to road types, not a promise — and any "Hither Green route" as history.

Choosing an instructor in Catford

When you compare driving instructors in Catford, check the badge in the windscreen. A green badge means a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). A pink badge means a trainee Potential Driving Instructor (PDI), teaching legally while still qualifying under supervision. Knowing which you have booked helps you judge experience fairly.

Then ask the Catford question: which centre are you actually teaching me for? An instructor still presenting Hither Green routes as your target is a year out of date. You want one who works regularly from Bromley — or Sidcup or West Wickham if that is your booking — and builds lessons around Catford's gyratory, South Circular and Brownhill Road and that centre's roads as one planned programme. Ask about manual and automatic, female instructors if you would prefer one, and pickup from your exact address. Our guide to driving schools near me explains the rest of the checklist.

A proper mock matters in Catford because the real test happens in another town. Run it at your booked centre, marked strictly. Ignore any guaranteed-pass promise.

Frequently asked questions

Where do Catford learners take their driving test now?

Usually at Bromley (London), 121-123 Burnt Ash Lane, Bromley, BR1 5AB — the centre the DVSA moved Hither Green bookings to. Sidcup (London), DA14 5AG, and West Wickham (London), BR4 0RL, are the alternatives. There is currently no practical test centre in the borough of Lewisham. Always follow your booking confirmation.

What happened to Hither Green test centre, and why does it matter for Catford?

Hither Green, at 42-44 Ennersdale Road, SE13 6JD, was under a mile from Catford and its routes ran through Catford itself. The DVSA stopped tests there from 1 February 2025, citing safety and quality issues, and moved booked tests to nearby centres including Bromley. Listings still showing it as Catford's live centre are out of date.

What are the pass rates at the centres Catford learners use?

Bromley (London) publishes 52.9% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data), Sidcup publishes 58.7% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data) and West Wickham publishes 51.60% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data). The test standard itself is identical at every centre.

Can I learn in an automatic in Catford?

Yes. We offer manual and automatic lessons in Catford. An automatic pass gives you an automatic-only licence, while a manual pass covers both. The Brownhill Road climb is where many local manual learners spend the most practice time.

Which areas should I practise most in Catford?

The Catford gyratory and Rushey Green, the South Circular (A205) in both directions, Bromley Road (A21) south towards your test centre, Brownhill Road's climb, and the Corbett Estate and Mountsfield Park streets for manoeuvres — plus regular sessions around Burnt Ash Lane in Bromley.

How much do driving lessons in Catford cost?

See our prices page for current packages and confirm for your postcode when you book. We do not publish a fixed Catford per-hour price here; as context, our Manchester lessons start from £35 per hour. The theory test is £23 and the practical is £62 on a weekday or £75 at evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
