Driving Lessons in Stourbridge: No Test Centre in the Town, Dudley (Kingswinford) Tests and Local Tips
Driving lessons in Stourbridge with door-to-door pickup and free theory practice. Manual & automatic, Dudley (Kingswinford) test centre covered.

Stourbridge has a ring road that swallows first-time visitors whole, a High Street that climbs, and residential streets in Norton and Wollaston where parked cars turn every other junction into a negotiation. What it does not have is a practical driving test centre. If you are looking for driving lessons in Stourbridge, plan around that from day one: you will learn on Stourbridge's streets, but you will almost certainly take your test a few miles north at Dudley, over in Kingswinford — so a good course makes you at home in both towns, not one.
Learn and Drive covers Stourbridge: our instructors offer door-to-door pickup, so your lesson starts at your home, work or college — no travelling to a meeting point. Exact pickup for your postcode is confirmed when you book, whether you are in the town centre, Norton, Wollaston, Oldswinford, Amblecote, Wordsley, Lye or Pedmore. We offer manual and automatic lessons, female instructors are available, and intensive courses are available for learners working to a deadline.
Where Stourbridge learners actually take the test
Stourbridge does not have its own practical driving test centre. National centre directories list no Stourbridge centre, and the schools and course providers covering the town agree on where its learners go instead: Dudley. Providers describe the Dudley centre as the option for learners in Dudley, Stourbridge and Kingswinford, and Stourbridge learners are listed among those who regularly test there. Stourbridge does have a theory test centre — do not let that confuse you. The theory test is taken locally; the practical is not.
Dudley driving test centre is at Newton House, The Pensnett Estate, Kingswinford, West Midlands, DY6 7YE. That address is consistent across DVSA centre listings and test centre directories, and it is the same address we publish in our Dudley guide, because it is the same centre. It sits on a small business estate just off the A4101 Dudley Road, north of Stourbridge via the A491. Centre directories list parking spaces at the centre, male and female toilets, and wheelchair access. They also ask candidates not to use the site for practice, to park in the designated DVSA bays on test day and to arrive no more than about ten minutes early — the estate is a working one, with commercial traffic moving in and out all day.
Be careful with older Dudley listings while you research: the previous Dudley centre at Lower Gornal is closed, and the Kingswinford centre at Newton House replaced it. If a website gives you a Stourbridge practical test centre, or sends Dudley candidates to Lower Gornal, it is out of date — check your booking confirmation for the definitive address for your date.
The pass rate at Dudley is 45.19% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data). That is below the national average — the same figure we publish in our Dudley guide, because it is the same test. Dudley's routes mix the busy A4101 and A491, a run of roundabouts, Kingswinford's estates and rural lanes on the outskirts, and a Stourbridge learner who has only ever practised at home meets all of that cold unless their lessons have deliberately crossed over. Wolverhampton and Wednesbury are the backup centres named for the area when Dudley is fully booked, but for most Stourbridge learners Dudley is the test to prepare for.
You must have passed your theory test before booking a practical. Nationally the theory test costs £23 and the practical costs £62 on a weekday or £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Waits are still long nationally — the National Audit Office reported an average wait of around 22 weeks in September 2025 — so talk to your instructor about booking early.
The local driving that matters in Stourbridge
The ring road comes first, because Stourbridge makes you use it. The one-way system circling the town centre carries you past the High Street, the bus interchange and the station side of town in a single committed flow: miss your exit and you go round again, in traffic that does not expect hesitation. Lane choice has to be early, mirror checks constant, and your exit identified from the signs rather than from memory — exactly the discipline the Dudley test then examines on its own roundabout sequences. Practise the full loop at shopping and school times, not just on a quiet Sunday.
The A491 is Stourbridge's teaching corridor in both directions. North, it climbs through Wordsley towards Kingswinford and the test centre — this is the road your test-day journey follows, and the road Dudley routes themselves use, with its roundabouts, speed changes and busy junctions. South, the same road runs through Amblecote and Hagley towards Bromsgrove, mixing town traffic with faster, more open stretches. The A458 does the east–west work: east through Lye and towards Halesowen and Birmingham, with parked cars, crossings and bus stops in a near-constant stream, and west towards Bridgnorth on a road that quickly turns rural, with bends and national-limit judgement replacing town observation.
The estates supply the third skill set. Norton, around Mary Stevens Park, Wollaston and Oldswinford give you residential streets in every width — some wide and quiet, others parked on both sides with meeting situations at every crest and corner. Oldswinford's older streets and the climb around the Cross add gradients and restricted views, and Wordsley's streets towards the canal and the Glass Quarter side of Amblecote add industrial traffic and tight turns. Parallel parking and pulling up on the right belong here, in real gaps between real cars, because that is where Dudley examiners will ask for them too.
Timing matters. The ring road, the A491 and the routes towards Dudley and Merry Hill are slow in both peaks, the town centre builds on market and shopping days, and school traffic changes Norton and Wollaston completely twice a day. Practise in those conditions before test day.
Practising around Stourbridge between lessons
Private practice with a legally qualified supervising driver, in a car insured for you and displaying L plates, works best in Stourbridge when you split it the way your lessons should be split: home-town skills first, then regular test-town sessions in Kingswinford.
At home, work the full range: the ring road loop until one-way lane discipline is automatic; the High Street and town centre streets for pedestrians, crossings and bus traffic; the A458 through Lye and the A491 in both directions; and long sessions in Norton, Wollaston and Oldswinford for meeting traffic, hill work and manoeuvres in real spaces. Add a rural run west on the A458 for bend and speed judgement.
Then cross to the test town regularly. Drive the A491 to Kingswinford and spend whole sessions around Newton House and the Pensnett Estate, on the A4101 and A491 and through Kingswinford's estates — our Dudley guide sets out that programme in full. Do not practise on the test centre site itself; directories are explicit that access for practice is not permitted, so use the surrounding roads instead. Between drives, use our free theory practice — 6,500+ questions, DVSA-format mock tests, 3D hazard perception practice and 178 road signs. The DVSA no longer publishes official test routes, so treat any route list as a guide to road types, not a promise.
Choosing an instructor in Stourbridge
When you compare driving instructors in Stourbridge, check the badge in the windscreen. A green badge means a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). A pink badge means a trainee Potential Driving Instructor (PDI), teaching legally while still qualifying under supervision. Knowing which you have booked helps you judge experience fairly.
Ask the Stourbridge question directly: will my lessons take me to Dudley? An instructor whose Stourbridge pupils test at Kingswinford — and who builds the A4101, A491 and Pensnett Estate work into the course, not just a single drive-past the week before — is planning for the test that actually exists. Ask how the ring road and the A458 feature in the programme too, since both build skills Dudley routes reward. Ask about manual and automatic, female instructors if you would prefer one, and pickup from your exact address. Our guide to driving schools near me explains the rest of the checklist — lesson structure, progress tracking, mock tests and cancellation terms.
A proper mock matters in Stourbridge because the test is in another town's streets. Run at least one strict mock from Newton House before the real day. Ignore any guaranteed-pass promise.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a driving test centre in Stourbridge?
No — not a practical one. Stourbridge has a theory test centre, but no practical test centre. Stourbridge learners test at Dudley, at Newton House, The Pensnett Estate, Kingswinford, West Midlands, DY6 7YE, north of the town via the A491. The old Dudley centre at Lower Gornal is closed. Check your booking confirmation for the definitive address for your date.
What is the pass rate for Stourbridge learners?
Stourbridge learners take the Dudley test, and the pass rate at Dudley is 45.19% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data), below the national average. Figures quoted for Lower Gornal on older websites belong to the closed centre, not to current Dudley tests.
Do Stourbridge learners need to practise in Kingswinford?
Yes. Your lessons should cover Stourbridge thoroughly — the ring road, the A458 and A491, and the Norton, Wollaston and Oldswinford streets — and then build in full sessions around the Dudley test centre in Kingswinford, because that is where the test happens. A course that never leaves Stourbridge leaves the hardest part unpractised.
Can I learn in an automatic in Stourbridge?
Yes. We offer manual and automatic lessons in Stourbridge. An automatic pass gives you an automatic-only licence, while a manual pass covers both.
Which areas should I practise most in Stourbridge?
The ring road and town centre, the A491 towards Kingswinford and towards Hagley, the A458 through Lye, and the residential streets of Norton, Wollaston, Oldswinford and Wordsley — plus full sessions in Kingswinford around the Dudley test centre once your test is booked.
How much do driving lessons in Stourbridge cost?
See our prices page for current packages and confirm for your postcode when you book. We do not publish a fixed Stourbridge per-hour price here; as context, our Manchester lessons start from £35 per hour. The theory test is £23 and the practical is £62 on a weekday or £75 at evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
