Driving Lessons in Middleton: No Test Centre in the Town, Chadderton Tests and Local Tips
Driving lessons in Middleton, Manchester with door-to-door pickup and free theory practice. Manual & automatic, Chadderton test centre covered.

Middleton, in north Manchester, is close enough to its test centre to walk the route in your head — and that is just as well, because Middleton no longer has a test centre of its own. The old Middleton centre has closed, like the one at Failsworth before it, and Middleton learners now test about two miles south-east at Chadderton, on the Broadway business park. If you are looking for driving lessons in Middleton, that short hop shapes everything: the A664 and Middleton Road become your daily roads, Broadway's dual carriageway becomes your test-day proving ground, and your lessons need to cover both towns.
Learn and Drive covers Middleton: our instructors offer door-to-door pickup, so your lesson starts at your home, work or college — no travelling to a meeting point. Exact pickup for your postcode is confirmed when you book, whether you are in Middleton town centre, Alkrington, Langley, Boarshaw, Rhodes, Hollinwood side or Mills Hill side. We offer manual and automatic lessons, female instructors are available, and intensive courses are available for learners working to a deadline.
Where Middleton learners actually take the test
Middleton does not have a practical driving test centre any more. The Middleton centre is closed — centre directories state it plainly — and no Middleton centre appears in current DVSA-derived listings. Providers covering the town agree on what replaced it: Chadderton is the nearest practical test centre for Middleton learners, around two miles south-east, and most Middleton learners take their test there. Some older websites still present a Middleton centre as if it were open, under addresses in the Greengate and town-centre area; those listings are leftovers from the closed centre. Check your booking confirmation for the definitive address for your date.
Chadderton driving test centre is at 9 Broadgate, Broadway Business Park, Chadderton, Oldham, Greater Manchester, OL9 9XA. That address is consistent across DVSA centre listings and test centre directories, and it is the same address we publish in our Oldham guide, because it is the same centre. It sits just off Broadway (the A663), between Middleton and Moston and close to the M60. Centre directories list no candidate car park at the centre itself, so you park on a nearby street — your instructor will know the routine — with male, female and disabled toilets and wheelchair access to the building; directories note that practising is not allowed on the site itself. The centre offers car tests and ADI part 3 tests, and it is a busy one.
The pass rate at Chadderton is 46.75% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data). That is a few points below the national average — the same figure we publish in our Oldham guide, because it is the same test. Chadderton is a demanding urban centre: Broadway's multi-lane junctions and roundabouts arrive within minutes, and candidates who have only practised Middleton's quieter streets get caught by the pace change. Rochdale, to the north-east, and Cheetham Hill, to the south-west, are the alternatives providers name when Chadderton is fully booked — our Rochdale guide covers that centre — but for most Middleton learners Chadderton is the test to prepare for.
You must have passed your theory test before booking a practical. Nationally the theory test costs £23 and the practical costs £62 on a weekday or £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Waits are still long nationally — the National Audit Office reported an average wait of around 22 weeks in September 2025 — so talk to your instructor about booking early.
The local driving that matters in Middleton
Middleton's own roads point south-east, towards the test. The A664 is the town's spine in both its Middleton forms: Rochdale Road running north towards Heywood and Rochdale, and Manchester New Road running south towards Blackley and Manchester. It is a busy, camera-watched A-road with bus stops, crossings, parked cars and speed changes, and it teaches the flowing, plan-ahead driving Chadderton's routes assume. Middleton Road (the A669) is the other daily road — the direct run from Middleton through Mills Hill to Chadderton and on towards Oldham. You will drive it on test morning itself, and Chadderton routes use Middleton Road and the residential streets off it heavily, so treat every lesson journey along it as test practice: the Hollin Lane roundabout and the approaches around Mills Hill station are the junctions local providers single out.
The town centre adds the slow skills. Long Street and the streets around Middleton Gardens and the market place mix one-way flow, pedestrian crossings, bus traffic and shoppers in a compact area, with the Arndale side concentrating cars, buses and pedestrians at school and shopping times. Observation and patience are the marks here, not speed. Then the estates change the test again: Alkrington's broad, leafy residential streets are where many Middleton learners first build control, while Langley — one of the largest council estates in the country — gives you dense, lived-in streets with parked cars on both sides, speed humps and meeting situations. Boarshaw and Rhodes add their own narrower streets and gradients towards the Rochdale side. Parallel parking and pulling up on the right belong in these streets, in real gaps, because Chadderton's examiners will ask for them in streets just like them.
The test itself then raises the pace. From Broadgate, routes are onto Broadway (the A663) almost immediately — a wide, fast dual carriageway with multiple lanes, traffic lights and roundabouts, where lane discipline is the skill: choose early, hold your lane through the junction, and do not drift as the road widens. The Featherstall Road roundabout, where Broadway meets the routes towards Oldham town centre, is the junction learners talk about afterwards. Middleton learners have one advantage here: Broadway is the natural continuation of their own A664/A669 corridor, so the road types feel familiar — but only if lessons have crossed into Chadderton regularly.
Timing matters too. The A664, Middleton Road and the M60 junctions south of the town are slow in both peaks, and the school runs around Alkrington and Langley change the estates completely twice a day. Practise in those conditions before test day.
Practising around Middleton between lessons
Private practice with a legally qualified supervising driver, in a car insured for you and displaying L plates, works best in Middleton when you split it between home-town skills and test-town sessions, the same split your lessons should follow.
At home, work the A664 in both directions, the town-centre loop around Long Street and Middleton Gardens at busy times, and long sessions in Alkrington, Langley and Boarshaw for meeting traffic, speed-hump discipline and manoeuvres in real spaces. Drive Middleton Road (the A669) through Mills Hill until the Hollin Lane roundabout and the station approaches are routine from every entry.
Then cross into Chadderton regularly and rehearse the test pattern itself: the Broadway Business Park area, Broadway in both directions, the Featherstall Road roundabout and the residential streets of Chadderton — our Oldham guide sets out that programme in full. Do not practise on the test centre site itself; use the surrounding roads instead. Between drives, use our free theory practice — 6,500+ questions, DVSA-format mock tests, 3D hazard perception practice and 178 road signs. The DVSA no longer publishes official test routes, so treat any route list as a guide to road types, not a promise.
Choosing an instructor in Middleton
When you compare driving instructors in Middleton, check the badge in the windscreen. A green badge means a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). A pink badge means a trainee Potential Driving Instructor (PDI), teaching legally while still qualifying under supervision. Knowing which you have booked helps you judge experience fairly.
Ask the Middleton question directly: will my lessons take me to Chadderton? An instructor whose Middleton pupils test at Broadgate — and who builds Broadway, the Featherstall Road roundabout and Middleton Road into the course as a planned programme, not a single drive-past in test week — is planning for the test that actually exists. Be wary of any instructor still talking about a Middleton test centre; it has closed. Ask about manual and automatic, female instructors if you would prefer one, and pickup from your exact address. Our guide to driving schools near me explains the rest of the checklist — lesson structure, progress tracking, mock tests and cancellation terms.
A proper mock matters in Middleton because the real test mixes a fast dual carriageway with estate streets so quickly. Run at least one strict mock from Broadgate before the real day, including a multi-lane roundabout and an estate manoeuvre. Ignore any guaranteed-pass promise.
