Leicester is a decision-dense city to learn in. The inner ring road, a one-way-heavy city centre, bus lanes, box junctions and long residential streets packed with parked cars mean driving lessons in Leicester pack more judgements into an hour than quieter towns manage in three. That intensity is useful: learners who master Leicester's roads tend to find driving anywhere else straightforward.

Leicester also gives you a genuine choice of test centre, and the two could hardly differ more. Cannock Street tests the inner city; Wigston tests the suburbs to the south. Driving instructors in Leicester will usually steer you towards the centre that matches where your lessons have happened, and the pass-rate gap between the two explains why that choice matters.

Learn and Drive covers Leicester: our instructors offer door-to-door pickup, so your lesson starts at your home, work or college — no travelling to a meeting point. Pickup for an exact postcode is confirmed at booking. See our wider coverage on our areas we cover page.

Leicester driving test centre

Leicester has two DVSA practical test centres for car tests.

Leicester (Cannock Street) Driving Test Centre is at 40 Cannock Street, Barkbythorpe Road, Troon Industrial Estate, Leicester, Leicestershire, LE4 9HT, in the north-east of the city. The pass rate is 40.20% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data). Routes work through Rushey Mead, Belgrave and Humberstone, taking in the ring road, bus lanes, box junctions, heavy pedestrian activity and tight residential streets. It is one of the more demanding urban tests in the East Midlands, which the pass rate reflects.

Leicester (Wigston) Driving Test Centre is at Tigers Road, off Saffron Road, South Wigston, Leicester, Leicestershire, LE18 4WS. The pass rate is 51.23% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data). Routes run through South Wigston, Blaby, Glen Parva and Oadby, using the A5199 corridor, Saffron Road, the Pork Pie roundabout area and faster stretches such as Wakes Road, alongside suburban estate driving.

The eleven-point gap between the centres is about geography, not examiner generosity — the standard is identical. Book where you have learned. The practical test costs £62 on weekdays and £75 on evenings and weekends nationally, and with average waits around 22 weeks nationally (National Audit Office, September 2025), early booking plus steady preparation beats a last-minute rush.

The local driving that matters in Leicester

The ring road. Leicester's inner ring road — including St Matthews Way and the A594 corridor — is a multi-lane circuit of junctions, lane drops and box junctions that Cannock Street routes use heavily. The skills are lane discipline, reading markings early, and never entering a box junction unless your exit is clear. Get those right and the ring road becomes routine; hesitate or drift and faults accumulate quickly.

The city-centre one-way system. Central Leicester channels traffic through one-way streets around the Clock Tower, Charles Street and Granby Street, with bus lanes and bus gates cutting across the pattern. Lessons with driving schools in Leicester should include centre driving at busy times, because the combination of one-way flow, buses, cyclists and pedestrians is exactly what catches learners out.

Belgrave and the Golden Mile. The A607 through Belgrave, with its dense shops, crossings and turning traffic, demands constant hazard perception on Cannock Street routes. Speed control and observation at pedestrian crossings matter more here than outright pace.

Wigston's suburban mix. Wigston routes contrast sharply: the A5199 Welford Road corridor, Saffron Road roundabouts, the Pork Pie roundabout, and 30 and 40 mph suburban roads through Blaby and Oadby, with manoeuvres on the estates around South Wigston. Faster stretches on Wakes Road test progress and overtaking judgement.

Parked cars and narrow streets. Both test areas feature residential streets narrowed by parking on both sides. Meeting oncoming traffic, choosing passing places and keeping clearance are everyday Leicester skills, not edge cases.

Practising around Leicester between lessons

Private practice must follow the learner rules. Your supervisor needs to be at least 21 and to have held a full licence for your car's category for three years or more. The car must be insured for you as a learner, display L plates front and rear, and you must hold a provisional licence. Motorways are off limits for private practice — learners may only drive on them with an approved driving instructor in a dual-controlled car.

For practice variety, Leicester is well supplied. Use your own neighbourhood's residential streets for manoeuvres and meeting traffic, the A5199 and A6 corridors for longer A-road drives once your instructor is happy, and the suburban roads around Oadby, Blaby and Glen Parva for roundabout work. Save the inner ring road and city-centre one-way system for when your observation and lane discipline are already confident — ideally after covering them in lessons first.

Keep theory study running in parallel. The theory test costs £23 and must be passed before you can book the practical. Learn and Drive learners get free theory practice: more than 6,500 practice questions, mock tests in DVSA format, 3D hazard perception practice and a 178 road-sign library on the site and app.

Choosing an instructor in Leicester

Start with the badge. A green octagonal badge means a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI); a pink triangular badge means a trainee instructor (PDI) teaching under licence while qualifying. Both can teach legally, but the experience differs, and you can confirm any instructor's status on the GOV.UK register of approved driving instructors.

Next, ask Leicester-specific questions. Does the instructor teach mainly for Cannock Street or Wigston, and will your lessons cover the roads your test will use? Can you choose manual or automatic? Do they collect you from home, work or college, or must you travel to them? Our guide to driving schools near me sets out the checks worth making with any school before you pay.

Female instructors are available with Learn and Drive — just let us know when you book if you would prefer one.
