Driving Lessons in Bristol: Avonmouth, Kingswood, Hills and the Ring Road
Driving lessons in Bristol with door-to-door pickup and free theory practice. Avonmouth and Kingswood test centres explained.

Bristol driving has a character all of its own: steep hills that test clutch control, a ring road that demands confident merging, and suburbs ranging from wide modern estates to narrow Victorian terraces. Learners sometimes worry about the hills and the Clean Air Zone. Neither should put you off — the hills become hill-start practice, and the city rewards drivers who plan ahead.
Learn and Drive covers Bristol: our instructors offer door-to-door pickup, so your lesson starts at your home, work or college — no travelling to a meeting point. Pickup for an exact postcode is confirmed at booking. We are Manchester-based and do not claim a Bristol office or branch. What matters is an instructor who knows whether you are testing at Avonmouth or Kingswood.
Whether you searched for Bristol driving lessons or driving instructors in Bristol, this guide covers the test centres and the local driving that matters most.
Bristol driving test centres
Bristol learners mainly use two centres, west and east. Both addresses below are published in DVSA test centre directories — always confirm your centre and address on your booking confirmation and through GOV.UK's "find a driving test centre" service before the day.
Bristol (Avonmouth) — Unit M6, Cabot Park, Merebank Road, Avonmouth, Bristol BS11 8AQ. Set in the Cabot Park industrial area in the docks side of the city, about six miles north-west of the centre. Routes combine quiet industrial-estate roads at the start with faster work towards the M5 corridor, the A403 and the approaches through Shirehampton, Lawrence Weston and Westbury-on-Trym, plus residential streets in the north-west suburbs. The pass rate is 55.5% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data) — above the Great Britain average, reflecting a road mix with less relentless city-centre pressure than many urban centres, not an easier standard.
Bristol (Kingswood) — The Siston Centre, Station Road, Kingswood, Bristol BS15 4GQ. The eastern centre, serving Kingswood, Hanham, Longwell Green and east Bristol. Expect the A420 through Kingswood, the A4174 Avon Ring Road, steep residential streets in Hanham and the Warmley area, and some rural-fringe lanes towards Wick. The pass rate is 51.93% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data).
A note on Brislington: older directories list Bristol (Brislington) at Government Buildings, Flowers Hill, Bath Road, Brislington, Bristol BS4 5JX, and you will still find routes and guides for it online. Listings for its current status conflict — at least one local source flags the centre as permanently closed — so do not book travel around an old address. If your booking confirmation says Brislington, follow it; otherwise, plan around Avonmouth or Kingswood and verify on GOV.UK.
Choose the centre that matches your practice geography. West and north-west Bristol learners will know Avonmouth's roads from their lessons; east Bristol learners will be at home from Kingswood. A few points of pass rate are not worth unfamiliar roads. Nationally the average practical test wait is around 22 weeks (National Audit Office, September 2025), so book in good time once your instructor agrees. The theory test costs £23; the practical costs £62 on weekdays and £75 for evenings and weekends.
The local driving that matters in Bristol
The A4174 Avon Ring Road. Both centres can take you towards Bristol's ring road, and Kingswood routes use it extensively. It is a fast dual carriageway — up to 70 mph in sections — with large roundabouts including the Warmley and Longwell Green junctions. Slip-road merging at speed, early lane choice for your exit, and holding your lane through multi-lane roundabouts are the core skills. Practise them in lessons until they feel routine; hesitation and late lane changes are the faults examiners see most here.
Hills, everywhere. Bristol is famously hilly, and examiners use it. Around Knowle, Stockwood, Hanham and the slopes up from the centre, you should expect to be asked to pull over and move off on gradients. In a manual car that means no rollback, balanced clutch and gas, and a proper check that it is safe before moving. In an automatic it still means controlling the roll and observing well. Park Street and the climbs around Clifton are lesson territory rather than typical test routes, but the skill transfers directly.
The A4 Bath Road and A420 corridors. From the south-east and east, the A4 Bath Road and the A420 through Kingswood bring bus lanes with operating hours, traffic-light sequences, pedestrian crossings and heavy shopping-area traffic. Reading bus-lane signs while keeping your speed and position correct is a very Bristol combination of tasks.
City centre complexity — for lessons and life after the test. The centre, Temple Meads, Cabot Circus and the inner ring bring one-way systems, bus gates and the Clean Air Zone. Tests start from Avonmouth and Kingswood, but a complete Bristol education includes the centre, where you will drive once you pass.
Residential variety. From narrow terraces in St George, Easton and Knowle to wider roads in Stoke Gifford, Bradley Stoke and Longwell Green, Bristol checks that you adapt speed and positioning street by street.
Practising around Bristol between lessons
Private practice must be legal: your supervisor must be over 21 and have held a full licence for that type of car for at least three years; the car must be insured for you as a learner, display L plates front and rear, and you must not use motorways in private practice. Motorway tuition is only allowed with an approved instructor in a dual-controlled car — relevant in Bristol, where the M32, M4 and M5 are close but off-limits for private practice.
Choose practice to match your centre. For Kingswood, Hanham, Kingswood and Longwell Green suit hill starts and manoeuvres, and lanes towards Wick and Bitton build judgement on bends. For Avonmouth, Shirehampton, Lawrence Weston and Westbury-on-Trym offer estates progressing to busier A-roads.
Join the A4174 only when your instructor is confident in your dual-carriageway work, starting at quieter times. Practise one junction at a time — join, hold your lane, leave correctly.
Theory work supports this: Learn and Drive's free practice gives you 6,500+ practice questions, mock tests in DVSA format, 3D hazard perception practice and a 178 road-sign library.
Choosing an instructor in Bristol
First, the badge. A green octagonal badge identifies a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). A pink triangular badge identifies a trainee licensed to teach while qualifying. Both are legal — check which you are offered, and see our guide to driving schools near me for comparing lessons and terms.
Next, centre knowledge. Ask: "Do you teach mainly Avonmouth or Kingswood routes?" Avonmouth tests its industrial start and north-western suburbs; Kingswood tests the ring road, A420 and hillier east-side streets. A matched instructor saves you lessons.
Then transmission. Manual leads to a licence covering both car types, and Bristol's hills will make your clutch control excellent, but early lessons are demanding. Automatic removes that workload, with your licence then covering automatics only. Learn and Drive offers both, intensive courses, and female instructors on request. Confirm door-to-door pickup for your postcode.
