Poor weather · rain, spray and reduced grip
Rain changes the information available to you: spray can obscure what is ahead, and tyres have less grip on a wet road. This coastal-road lesson helps you practise looking further ahead, leaving more space and making steering and speed changes gently.
The Highway Code says stopping distances in wet weather will be at least double those needed on dry roads. Conditions vary, so treat that as a warning to increase your margin rather than a precise prediction. If visibility becomes seriously reduced, follow the lighting rules and switch fog lights off when visibility improves.
What to practise
- Increase following distance and look beyond nearby spray.
- Slow down smoothly if grip or visibility is reduced.
- Recognise when weather makes a journey unsafe or requires a different plan.
