Pedestrian crossing · anticipation at a busy town gate
A crossing is a place to plan early, not a place to make a late decision. This lesson places a zebra crossing, a refuge island and a school-patrol approach along one village gateway so you can practise reading the scene, easing your approach and keeping the crossing clear.
Look for people who may be waiting or preparing to cross, and do not assume that a vehicle ahead has seen them. Follow the signals or instructions at the crossing and remain prepared for someone to move unexpectedly. The Highway Code sets out the distinct rules for zebra crossings and crossings controlled by an authorised person.
What to practise
- Scan both sides of a crossing and identify people who may cross.
- Approach at a speed that gives time to stop smoothly if needed.
- Keep the crossing clear and respond to a school crossing patrol’s signal.
