Driving Lessons in Tower Hamlets: Wanstead and Goodmayes Tests, the A13 and Local Tips
Driving lessons in Tower Hamlets with door-to-door pickup and free theory practice. Manual & automatic, Wanstead and Goodmayes centres covered.

Tower Hamlets has no practical driving test centre — not in Whitechapel, not in Poplar, not anywhere in the borough — and it never really could. The DVSA does not run car tests out of streets as dense as Commercial Road or the Isle of Dogs, so Tower Hamlets learners travel north-east to test, usually at Wanstead or Goodmayes. If you are looking for driving lessons in Tower Hamlets, your course therefore has two halves: the borough itself, which teaches anticipation, bus lanes and 20mph discipline better than almost anywhere in London, and the test areas around Hermon Hill and Goodmayes Road, which have to feel just as familiar by test day. One trap to clear up first: Bethnal Green, inside the borough, has a theory test centre only — no practical tests at all.
Learn and Drive covers Tower Hamlets: our instructors offer door-to-door pickup, so your lesson starts at your home, work or college — no travelling to a meeting point. Exact pickup for your postcode is confirmed when you book, whether you are in Whitechapel, Bethnal Green, Bow, Mile End, Stepney, Limehouse, Poplar, Wapping or on the Isle of Dogs around Canary Wharf and Millwall. We offer manual and automatic lessons, female instructors are available, and intensive courses are available for learners working to a deadline.
Tower Hamlets driving test centres — there isn't one; Wanstead and Goodmayes are where you test
There is no DVSA practical test centre in Tower Hamlets. That is stated plainly by course providers covering the borough — there is no Tower Hamlets test centre — and it matches the current DVSA-derived London centre lists, which contain no Tower Hamlets entry. What the borough does have is theory provision: the Bethnal Green theory test centre at Unit 3, Ground Floor, Corbridge Crescent, Bethnal Green, London, E2 9DS, and the East London (Limehouse) theory centre — both theory only. Passing your theory in the borough does not make your practical local.
The nearest practical centre for most Tower Hamlets learners is Wanstead, about four miles north-east: Wanstead driving test centre is at 2 Devon House, Hermon Hill, Wanstead, London, E11 2AW, just off the A113 between Wanstead and Snaresbrook. That address is consistent across DVSA-derived centre listings and multiple test centre directories. The pass rate at Wanstead is 44.4% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data). The other main choice is Goodmayes, further east and the busiest centre in the capital: Goodmayes driving test centre is at 98 Goodmayes Road, Ilford, Greater London, IG3 9UZ, on a shopping parade in the borough of Redbridge. Its pass rate is 43.7% (passrates.uk, from DVSA data).
Two closed centres explain a lot of the outdated advice you will find online. Barking (Tanner Street), once the closest centre for the east of the borough, closed on 3 January 2026, with its tests moved to Goodmayes and Wanstead — do not book or travel there. Hither Green, south of the river, closed on 1 February 2025 and is no longer bookable either, however many old directories still list it. Follow the centre named on your GOV.UK booking confirmation, not an old listing.
You must have passed your theory test before booking a practical. Nationally the theory test costs £23 and the practical costs £62 on a weekday or £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Waits are still long nationally — the National Audit Office reported an average wait of around 22 weeks in September 2025 — so talk to your instructor about booking early.
The local driving that matters in Tower Hamlets
Tower Hamlets driving is corridor driving. The A13 — Commercial Road through Limehouse and Stepney, then East India Dock Road through Poplar — is the borough's spine: multi-lane, bus-heavy, with lane drops, side turnings and the Limehouse Link tunnel (A1203) diving off towards Canary Wharf. Reading lane markings early and holding your position past the tunnel slips is the core skill. The A11 — Whitechapel Road and Mile End Road, continuing as Bow Road — runs parallel to the north with the same character: buses, market and hospital traffic around the Royal London, cyclists everywhere, and crossings in constant use.
The Isle of Dogs is a third, distinct environment. Westferry Road loops the peninsula past Millwall and the Canary Wharf towers, Aspen Way (A1261) carries fast traffic along its northern edge towards the Blackwall Tunnel approach (A102), and the dockside streets mix new residential blocks, construction traffic and tight junctions. Bow and Old Ford add the fourth environment: Roman Road's market traffic, the residential grid around Victoria Park, and the A12 Blackwall Tunnel northern approach junctions, where lane choice has to be made early and calmly.
Most of the borough is 20mph, and holding exactly that — while watching for delivery riders, dock traffic and pedestrians stepping out between buses — is a genuine skill. Parts of the western edge also fall inside the Congestion Charge zone. None of this is test-route driving, but it is the driving you will actually do, and it builds the observation habits Wanstead and Goodmayes routes reward.
Then there is the driving your test samples, and lessons must take you there deliberately. North-east to Wanstead, the run climbs through Leytonstone to Hermon Hill, the residential streets towards South Woodford, and the A12 Eastern Avenue junctions Wanstead routes use, including the Redbridge roundabout system where the A12 meets the A406. East to Goodmayes, lessons work Green Lane, the High Road through Seven Kings and the streets around South Park. An instructor who only ever drives you around E1 and E14 is preparing you for half your test.
Practising around Tower Hamlets between lessons
Private practice with a legally qualified supervising driver, in a car insured for you and displaying L plates, works best in Tower Hamlets when you split it between borough driving and test-area driving — and keep the earliest practice away from Commercial Road at peak times.
Start on the quieter residential grids: Old Ford and Bow, the streets around Victoria Park, and the dockside roads of Millwall away from the Canary Wharf peak, where 20mph discipline, meeting traffic and manoeuvres between parked cars can be built at your own pace. Then work the corridors — Whitechapel Road and Mile End Road, Commercial Road and East India Dock Road, and a full Isle of Dogs loop via Westferry Road and Aspen Way — at busier times, for bus lanes, crossings and lane discipline.
Make the run to your booked centre a regular session, not a one-off: through Leytonstone to Hermon Hill and the South Woodford streets for Wanstead, or east along the High Road to Goodmayes Road and South Park for Goodmayes, until both the journey and the test area feel ordinary. Between drives, use our free theory practice — 6,500+ questions, DVSA-format mock tests, 3D hazard perception practice and 178 road signs. The DVSA no longer publishes official test routes, so treat any route list as a guide to road types, not a promise.
Choosing an instructor in Tower Hamlets
When you compare driving instructors in Tower Hamlets, check the badge in the windscreen. A green badge means a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). A pink badge means a trainee Potential Driving Instructor (PDI), teaching legally while still qualifying under supervision. Knowing which you have booked helps you judge experience fairly.
Then ask the Tower Hamlets question: which centre are you teaching me for — Wanstead or Goodmayes — and when do my lessons shift there? An instructor whose plan never leaves the borough, or who still talks about Barking (Tanner Street) or Hither Green as your target, is preparing you for a test that no longer exists or happens somewhere else. You want both halves as one planned programme: the borough's corridors and 20mph streets, and your centre's roads. Ask how you will travel to the centre on test day, about manual and automatic, female instructors if you would prefer one, and pickup from your exact address. Our guide to driving schools near me explains the rest of the checklist — lesson structure, progress tracking, mock tests and cancellation terms.
A proper mock matters here because the real test happens in another borough. Run it from your booked centre, in real traffic, marked strictly. Ignore any guaranteed-pass promise.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a driving test centre in Tower Hamlets?
No. Tower Hamlets has no DVSA practical test centre. The borough has theory test centres — including Bethnal Green, Unit 3, Corbridge Crescent, E2 9DS — but theory and practical are different tests in different places. Tower Hamlets learners take their practical at Wanstead or Goodmayes. Always follow your booking confirmation.
Where do Tower Hamlets learners take their practical test?
Usually at Wanstead, 2 Devon House, Hermon Hill, Wanstead, E11 2AW — the nearest centre for most of the borough — or at Goodmayes, 98 Goodmayes Road, Ilford, IG3 9UZ, which suits the east of the borough around Poplar and the Isle of Dogs. Barking (Tanner Street) closed on 3 January 2026 and Hither Green closed on 1 February 2025; neither is bookable.
What are the pass rates at Wanstead and Goodmayes?
Wanstead is 44.4% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data) and Goodmayes is 43.7% (passrates.uk, from DVSA data). The two are close; choose the centre whose area you can practise most, because familiarity with the A12 junctions or the Goodmayes streets is worth more than a point of pass rate.
Can I learn in an automatic in Tower Hamlets?
Yes. We offer manual and automatic lessons in Tower Hamlets. An automatic pass gives you an automatic-only licence, while a manual pass covers both. Many borough learners choose automatic because so much local driving is stop-start — the choice is yours, and we will talk it through when you book.
Which areas should I practise most in Tower Hamlets?
Commercial Road and East India Dock Road (A13), Whitechapel Road and Mile End Road (A11), the Isle of Dogs loop via Westferry Road and Aspen Way, and the Bow and Old Ford residential streets — plus regular sessions at your booked centre, Wanstead or Goodmayes.
How much do driving lessons in Tower Hamlets cost?
See our prices page for current packages and confirm for your postcode when you book. We do not publish a fixed Tower Hamlets per-hour price here; as context, our Manchester lessons start from £35 per hour. The theory test is £23 and the practical is £62 on a weekday or £75 at evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
