Stockport learners drive in two worlds at once. There is the town itself — the A6 climbing through Heaviley and Hazel Grove, the one-way system around Mersey Square, the steep, parked-up streets of Edgeley and the Heatons — and there is the test centre over in Bredbury, beside the M60, where routes run through industrial estates, Woodley and Romiley. If you are looking for driving lessons in Stockport, you need an instructor who teaches both, because passing here means handling Greater Manchester traffic, not just quiet side streets.

Learn and Drive covers Stockport: our instructors offer door-to-door pickup, so your lesson starts at your home, work or college — no travelling to a meeting point. Exact pickup for your postcode is confirmed when you book, whether you are in Bredbury, Woodley, Romiley, Edgeley, Cheadle, Bramhall, Hazel Grove or the Heatons. We offer manual and automatic lessons, female instructors are available, and intensive courses are available for learners working to a deadline. Stockport is in Greater Manchester, close to our Manchester base — but, to be clear, we do not claim a Stockport office or branch either; lessons here work the same way as everywhere we cover, with pickup at your door.

Stockport driving test centre

Stockport does not currently have a practical test centre listed under its own name in DVSA listings. Stockport learners book Bredbury (Manchester) driving test centre, at Lingard Lane, Bredbury, Stockport, Greater Manchester, SK6 2QT. That address is consistent across DVSA centre listings and test centre directories. It sits by Bredbury Park Industrial Estate, between Brinnington and Bredbury itself, just off the A560 and close to junction 25 of the M60. There is a car park at the centre, male and female toilets, and tests listed for cars, motorcycle module 1 and module 2, larger vehicles and ADI part 3.

One point to handle carefully: at least one local driving school page lists a Stockport test centre on Dialstone Lane, SK2 6AG, off the A6. We could not find that address in any current DVSA-derived centre directory — every current listing we checked gives Lingard Lane in Bredbury as the centre serving Stockport. Treat Dialstone Lane as outdated unless your own paperwork says otherwise, and always check your booking confirmation for the definitive address for your date.

The pass rate at Bredbury (Manchester) is 55.97% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data). That is above the national average on that measure, but do not read it as an easy centre: Bredbury routes mix fast M60-side A-roads with tight estate streets, and under-prepared candidates still fail on lane discipline and junction observation. The ones who pass have usually practised the local pattern: the A560 corridor, the Portwood roundabout, and the estates of Bredbury, Woodley and Brinnington until the changes of pace feel automatic.

You must have passed your theory test before booking a practical. Nationally the theory test costs £23 and the practical costs £62 on a weekday or £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Waits are still long nationally — the National Audit Office reported an average wait of around 22 weeks in September 2025 — so talk to your instructor about booking early, and note that Stockport learners can also consider other Greater Manchester centres, such as West Didsbury or Cheetham Hill, when choosing where to book.

The local driving that matters in Stockport

Your test starts with an industrial estate, and that matters. Lingard Lane has wide estate roads, lorries turning into units, and parked cars narrowing the carriageway. Examiners are watching observation and meeting traffic from the first minute — creeping out impatiently behind a delivery vehicle is exactly how a test goes wrong early. From Lingard Lane, routes join the A560 Stockport Road network, where speeds rise, lanes multiply and decisions have to be earlier.

The Portwood roundabout, by junction 27 of the M60, is the junction Stockport learners talk about most. It is a large, busy multi-lane roundabout feeding the motorway, the A560 and the town centre via Portwood. Lane choice on approach, signalling, and holding your lane through the roundabout are what examiners are scoring; drifting or a late lane change here is a classic serious fault. Practise it from several entries, at busy times, not just on a quiet Sunday. Routes also use Woodley and the roads towards Romiley, where the driving changes character: narrower, hillier residential streets, parked cars on both sides, and village-style junctions where observation matters more than speed.

Your wider Stockport lessons should go well beyond the Bredbury test area, because this is the driving you will do for real after you pass. The A6 Wellington Road South is the town's spine: fast, busy, and unforgiving of poor lane discipline through Heaviley, and demanding again at the Hazel Grove junction with the A523, where lane selection needs to start hundreds of metres early. Bramhall Lane through Davenport, the Mersey Square and town centre one-way streets, and the residential grids of Edgeley, Shaw Heath and Offerton all belong in a proper Stockport programme. So do hill starts — Stockport is not flat, and the streets around Edgeley, Lancashire Hill and the Heatons will find any weakness in clutch control.

Timing matters too. The A6 and the M60 junctions are slow in the morning and late-afternoon peaks, and Bredbury Park traffic builds around shift changes — practise in those conditions before test day.

Practising around Stockport between lessons

Private practice with a legally qualified supervising driver, in a car insured for you and displaying L plates, works best in Stockport when you deliberately cover both worlds: the Bredbury test area and the town driving you will rely on every day.

Start from Bredbury — Lingard Lane and the estate approaches, then the A560, Stockport Road and the Portwood roundabout, until approach lanes and exit signalling are consistent at busy times. Then spend proper time in Woodley, Romiley and Brinnington at school and commuter times, practising meeting traffic, passing parked cars, and manoeuvres in real spaces.

Add the town: the A6 from Hazel Grove through Heaviley towards the town centre, Bramhall Lane and Davenport, the Mersey Square one-way system, and the estates of Edgeley and Offerton. The car test does not require motorway driving, so you will not be taken onto the M60 itself, but confident faster-road driving on the A560 and A6 helps you handle its junctions calmly.

Between drives, use our free theory practice — 6,500+ questions, DVSA-format mock tests, 3D hazard perception practice and 178 road signs. The DVSA no longer publishes official test routes, so treat any route list as a guide to road types, not a promise.

Choosing an instructor in Stockport

When you compare driving instructors in Stockport, check the badge in the windscreen. A green badge means a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). A pink badge means a trainee Potential Driving Instructor (PDI), teaching legally while still qualifying under supervision. Knowing which you have booked helps you judge experience fairly.

Ask about Bredbury specifically. Does the instructor work regularly from Lingard Lane? Will lessons cover the A560 and Portwood roundabout, Woodley and Romiley, and still give you proper time on the A6 and in the town centre, as a planned programme? An instructor who only ever teaches one side of Stockport leaves you half prepared. Ask about manual and automatic, female instructors if you would prefer one, and pickup from your exact address. Our guide to driving schools near me explains the rest of the checklist — lesson structure, progress tracking, mock tests and cancellation terms.

A proper mock matters in Stockport because the real test changes pace so often — estate road, fast A-road, major roundabout, village street. Include all four, marked strictly. Ignore any guaranteed-pass promise.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the driving test centre for Stockport?

Stockport learners use Bredbury (Manchester) driving test centre, at Lingard Lane, Bredbury, Stockport, SK6 2QT — by Bredbury Park Industrial Estate, off the A560 and close to M60 junction 25. Some older web pages list other Stockport addresses, so always check your booking confirmation for the address for your date.

What is the pass rate at Bredbury (Manchester)?

The pass rate is 55.97% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data), above the national average on that measure. It is still a demanding centre — the A560, the Portwood roundabout and the Bredbury and Woodley estates punish poor lane discipline and weak observation.

Do Stockport tests include motorway driving?

No. Motorway driving is not part of the car practical test, so you will not be taken onto the M60. Expect the fast A560 dual carriageway sections and the roundabouts that feed the motorway at Portwood and Bredbury instead, then correct slowing for residential areas.

Can I learn in an automatic in Stockport?

Yes. We offer manual and automatic lessons in Stockport. An automatic pass gives you an automatic-only licence, while a manual pass covers both.

Which areas should I practise most in Stockport?

Bredbury and Woodley around the test centre, Lingard Lane, the A560 and the Portwood roundabout, plus the A6 through Heaviley and Hazel Grove, Bramhall Lane, and the Edgeley and Offerton estates for narrower streets and manoeuvres. Cover both rush hour and quieter times.
