Lewisham learners need this guide to start with a correction, because much of the internet has not caught up. The borough's own test centre, Hither Green, closed in February 2025. Websites still list it, quote routes from it and will sell you practice for a centre that no longer exists. If you are looking for driving lessons in Lewisham, your real preparation is for Bromley, Sidcup or West Wickham — and for Lewisham's own formidable driving: two gyratories, the South Circular, the A20 and A21 corridors, and the climb from Deptford up to Forest Hill.

Learn and Drive covers Lewisham: our instructors offer door-to-door pickup, so your lesson starts at your home, work or college — no travelling to a meeting point. Exact pickup for your postcode is confirmed when you book, whether you are in Lewisham town centre, Catford, Hither Green, Lee, Brockley, Forest Hill, Honor Oak, Deptford-side Lewisham or Sydenham. We offer manual and automatic lessons, female instructors are available, and intensive courses are available for learners working to a deadline.

Lewisham driving test centre — Hither Green closed in 2025; Bromley is where Lewisham learners test now

Hither Green driving test centre was at 42-44 Ennersdale Road, Hither Green, London, SE13 6JD — inside this borough, just south of Hither Green station, and for years the centre for a wide sweep of south-east London postcodes. It is now history. In an official DVSA bulletin, the agency announced: from 1 February 2025, DVSA will no longer carry out driving tests at Hither Green. The reasons given were issues affecting the safety and quality of tests there — inadequate road environments, logistical constraints and repetitive routes. Tests already booked were moved to nearby centres, including Bromley.

Everything since confirms the closure is permanent, not a pause. Hither Green does not appear on the DVSA's current list of London test centres, and current provider pages for Lewisham state that no Lewisham centre is published in the latest DVSA figures — learners here test at Bromley, West Wickham or Sidcup, all within about six miles. PassMeFast's Lewisham page still calls Lewisham the only inner London borough with its own centre: that was true once, and it is exactly the kind of stale listing to distrust.

So where do Lewisham learners actually test? Primarily Bromley (London), at 121-123 Burnt Ash Lane, Bromley, BR1 5AB — the centre the DVSA itself named when moving Hither Green tests, roughly four and a half miles south-east of Lewisham town centre. That address matches our published Bromley guide. The pass rate at Bromley (London) is 52.9% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data), and its routes — A2212 bus lanes, the A21 corridor, Bromley town centre — continue naturally from Lewisham driving.

The alternatives are Sidcup (London), at 2 Crayside, Five Arches Business Estate, Maidstone Road, Sidcup, DA14 5AG, with a pass rate of 58.7% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data), and West Wickham (London), at 56 Glebe Way, West Wickham, BR4 0RL, with a pass rate of 51.60% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data). Sidcup suits the Lee and Hither Green side of the borough; West Wickham suits Forest Hill and Sydenham learners when Bromley dates are scarce.

We do not quote a pass rate for Hither Green, and you should be suspicious of anyone who does. The centre is closed, so no current rate can exist; the two sources this programme may cite publish no usable car pass rate for it — one records no data for the centre, and the other's Hither Green page is corrupted, mixing it up with an unrelated training centre elsewhere. The standard at Bromley, Sidcup and West Wickham is the national standard, identical everywhere.

You must have passed your theory test before booking a practical — a separate appointment at a theory centre, not at Ennersdale Road either. Nationally the theory test costs £23 and the practical costs £62 on a weekday or £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Waits are still long nationally — the National Audit Office reported an average wait of around 22 weeks in September 2025. Check your booking confirmation for the definitive centre and address; for Lewisham learners since February 2025, it should never say Hither Green.

The local driving that matters in Lewisham

Lewisham town centre is the borough's examination hall, even though no examiner sits in it any more. The one-way system around the station, the DLR terminus, the shopping centre and the High Street market concentrates buses, taxis and pedestrians into a few hundred metres where lanes split for the A20 and A21 with little forgiveness for a late change. Loampit Vale at commuter times, with station crowds crossing at every light, teaches anticipation better than any quiet street can.

Catford, a mile south, holds the second gyratory: the South Circular (A205) meeting the A21 at the Catford one-way system, with Brownhill Road climbing away eastwards. Lane discipline has to be early and committed here — the system punishes drifting and rewards drivers who read signs two junctions ahead. Add Lee High Road and the A20 corridor through Lee for sustained multi-lane driving, bus lanes and crossing-heavy shopping parades.

The borough's third character is height. From Deptford and Lewisham the ground climbs steadily south and west — up through Brockley, and on the A205 London Road towards Forest Hill and Sydenham Hill, one of inner south London's sustained climbs. Manual learners feel it in hill starts at side turnings all the way up; everyone feels it in speed control coming down. The residential streets of Hither Green, Lee and Brockley — parked terraces, narrow gaps, school traffic — remain excellent manoeuvre and meeting-traffic practice: the borough still teaches the driving, it just no longer hosts the exam.

University Hospital Lewisham adds ambulance and visitor traffic to the High Street all day, and both gyratories queue hard in both peaks. Practise in those conditions before test day, not just on quiet Sundays.

Practising around Lewisham between lessons

Private practice with a legally qualified supervising driver, in a car insured for you and displaying L plates, works best in Lewisham when you split it between borough driving and test-centre driving — and treat the second as non-negotiable, because your test is no longer local.

Start in the residential south and east: Hither Green, Lee and the Brockley streets, where 20mph discipline, meeting traffic and manoeuvres between parked cars can be built without gyratory pressure. Then work the town centre and Catford systems at busier times, and the Forest Hill climb in both directions, until lane commitment and gradient control are routine.

Make the run to your booked centre a regular session, not a test-morning discovery: south-east to Burnt Ash Lane in Bromley for most learners, or east to Sidcup if that is your centre. Practise that centre's own streets — the A2212 bus lanes for Bromley, the A20 bypass for Sidcup — until they feel like home roads. The DVSA no longer publishes official test routes, so treat any route list as a guide to road types, not a promise — and any "Hither Green test route" product as a historical document.

Between drives, use our free theory practice — 6,500+ questions, DVSA-format mock tests, 3D hazard perception practice and 178 road signs. Gyratory signage, bus-lane rules and pedestrian priority are all theory topics Lewisham tests in practice.

Choosing an instructor in Lewisham

When you compare driving instructors in Lewisham, check the badge in the windscreen. A green badge means a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). A pink badge means a trainee Potential Driving Instructor (PDI), teaching legally while still qualifying under supervision. Knowing which you have booked helps you judge experience fairly.

Then ask the Lewisham question: which centre are you actually teaching me for? An instructor who still talks about Hither Green routes as your target is preparing you for a test that does not exist. You want one who works regularly from Bromley, Sidcup or West Wickham, and builds lessons around Lewisham's gyratories and climbs and that centre's roads as one planned programme. Ask about manual and automatic, female instructors if you would prefer one, and pickup from your exact address. Our guide to driving schools near me explains the rest of the checklist.

A proper mock matters more in Lewisham than most places, because the real test happens in another borough. Run it at your booked centre, marked strictly. Ignore any guaranteed-pass promise.

Frequently asked questions

Where do Lewisham learners take their driving test now?

Usually at Bromley (London), 121-123 Burnt Ash Lane, Bromley, BR1 5AB — the centre the DVSA moved Hither Green bookings to when it closed. Sidcup (London), DA14 5AG, and West Wickham (London), BR4 0RL, are the alternatives. There is currently no practical test centre in the borough of Lewisham. Always follow your booking confirmation.

What happened to Hither Green driving test centre?

The DVSA stopped carrying out tests there from 1 February 2025, citing issues affecting the safety and quality of tests — inadequate road environments, logistical constraints and repetitive routes. Booked tests were moved to nearby centres including Bromley. The centre at 42-44 Ennersdale Road, SE13 6JD, remains listed on many websites, but it is closed and no test can be booked there.

What is the pass rate at Hither Green?

We do not quote one, honestly: the centre is closed, so no current figure exists, and the sources this guide is permitted to cite do not publish a usable car pass rate for it. Websites quoting a Hither Green percentage are using old or unreliable data. The centres Lewisham learners use now publish 52.9% at Bromley (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data), 58.7% at Sidcup (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data) and 51.60% at West Wickham (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data).

I already have a test booked — could it still say Hither Green?

No genuine current booking can. Tests booked at Hither Green for dates from 1 February 2025 onwards were moved by the DVSA, which contacted candidates with the new centre. If anything you hold says Hither Green for a future date, verify it on GOV.UK before travelling.

Can I learn in an automatic in Lewisham?

Yes. We offer manual and automatic lessons in Lewisham. An automatic pass gives you an automatic-only licence, while a manual pass covers both. The borough's sustained climbs — up to Forest Hill in particular — are where many manual learners spend the most hours, so we will talk the choice through when you book.

How much do driving lessons in Lewisham cost?

See our prices page for current packages and confirm for your postcode when you book. We do not publish a fixed Lewisham per-hour price here; as context, our Manchester lessons start from £35 per hour. The theory test is £23 and the practical is £62 on a weekday or £75 at evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
