Inverness is the Highland capital, and its driving test has a range no city-centre centre can match. Within one drive you can leave an industrial estate on the Longman, join the A9 dual carriageway, feel crosswinds on the approach to the Kessock Bridge, thread through town-centre traffic on Academy Street and Millburn Road, and finish with a manoeuvre on a steep residential street in Scorguie. If you are looking for driving lessons in Inverness, that urban-to-rural range — and the weather that comes with it — is what you need to prepare for.

Learn and Drive covers Inverness: our instructors offer door-to-door pickup, so your lesson starts at your home, work or college — no travelling to a meeting point. Exact pickup for your postcode is confirmed when you book, whether you are in the city centre, Scorguie, Muirtown, Merkinch, Hilton, Culduthel, Culloden, Cradlehall or Smithton. We offer manual and automatic lessons, female instructors are available, and intensive courses are available for learners working to a deadline.

Inverness driving test centre

Inverness has more than one DVSA site on the Longman, and the listings do not all agree — this is one centre where reading your booking confirmation carefully genuinely matters, so read this section before you travel.

Current GOV.UK guidance on moving a booked test names the car test centre as Inverness (Longman Drive). The multi-purpose test centre is at 4 Longman Drive, Inverness, IV1 1SU, on the Longman Industrial Estate north of the city centre — that address is also the one shown for Inverness Driving Test Centre in GOV.UK place listings. Separately, DVSA-derived directories list Inverness (Seafield Road) at Longman Industrial Estate, Seafield Road, Inverness, IV1 1SG, a short distance away on the same estate. In the most recent DVSA-derived feed we checked, the Seafield Road site was listed for lorry and bus tests and ADI part 2 and part 3, rather than car tests. Older pages also describe a former car centre at Cradlehall Business Park, IV2 5GH, on the other side of the city — do not navigate there on the strength of an old listing.

In plain terms: book, then check your booking confirmation for the exact centre name, address and postcode for your date, and navigate to that — Longman Drive IV1 1SU for current car tests in the listings we checked, not Seafield Road and not Cradlehall. The theory test centre is yet another Longman Drive address, at 38 Longman Drive, so check which building your confirmation actually names. Both Longman sites sit just off the A82 Longman Road and close to the A9, around a mile from Inverness station.

The pass rate at Inverness (Longman Drive) is 45.9% (passrates.uk, from DVSA data). That is a little below the national average, which fits a centre serving the whole Highlands: candidates travel in from a wide rural area, and routes mix town driving with fast A-road sections that punish under-preparation. The older Inverness (Seafield Road) car figures published for earlier years were higher, in the high forties, but they describe a different site and period.

You must have passed your theory test before booking a practical. Nationally the theory test costs £23 and the practical costs £62 on a weekday or £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Waits are still long nationally — the National Audit Office reported an average wait of around 22 weeks in September 2025 — so talk to your instructor about booking early.

The local driving that matters in Inverness

The Longman roundabout, where the A82 meets the A9 corridor on the edge of the estate, is the junction that defines Inverness testing. It is a busy multi-lane roundabout carrying city traffic, retail park traffic and A9 through-traffic at once. Lane confusion towards the city exit is the classic fault: choose your lane early from the signs, hold your position through the roundabout, and signal off cleanly. Stadium Road and Harbour Road, serving the football stadium and the harbour area, add narrower industrial-estate driving where tests often begin.

The A9 itself brings the fastest driving on the test. Routes use the dual carriageway around the Raigmore Interchange and towards the Kessock Bridge, where crosswinds are a real factor — you will feel the car move, and examiners want to see calm steering correction, not a white-knuckle grip and a drifting lane position. Joining at proper speed, overtaking judgement and leaving at the correct interchange all feature. The A96 towards Raigmore and the retail parks adds another busy dual-carriageway pattern with closely spaced junctions.

In town, Millburn Road, Academy Street and the Eastgate area bring traffic lights in sequence, pedestrian crossings, buses and shoppers — a compact city-centre test where anticipation matters more than speed. Telford Street and the Muirtown side of the city add another roundabout pattern by the Caledonian Canal area. The residential side is hilly: Scorguie, above the city, tests hill starts, clutch control and meeting traffic on sloping streets with parked cars, while Hilton, Culduthel, Culloden and Cradlehall provide the manoeuvre and estate driving — parallel parking and pull up on the right on real streets, with school traffic at the wrong moments. Some routes head out towards rural roads where national speed limit means 60mph on single carriageway, bends tighten without warning and passing places and slow agricultural traffic appear — a completely different discipline from the Longman.

Weather is part of the Inverness test in a way it is not further south. Practise in rain and low winter light, not just on fine summer evenings.

Practising around Inverness between lessons

Private practice with a legally qualified supervising driver, in a car insured for you and displaying L plates, works best in Inverness when you deliberately cover the full range: estate, roundabout, dual carriageway, town centre, hills, rural road.

Start on the Longman — the estate roads, Stadium Road and Harbour Road — then the Longman roundabout in both directions and at peak times until lane choice is automatic. Build in the A9 between the Longman, Raigmore Interchange and the Kessock Bridge approach, practising joining, lane discipline and wind correction. Add town-centre circuits on Millburn Road and Academy Street, Scorguie for hill work and manoeuvres, and Culloden and Cradlehall for estate driving. Between drives, use our free theory practice — 6,500+ questions, DVSA-format mock tests, 3D hazard perception practice and 178 road signs. Rural hazards, dual-carriageway rules and weather-related stopping distances are theory topics Inverness tests in practice. The DVSA no longer publishes official test routes, so treat any route list as a guide to road types, not a promise.

Choosing an instructor in Inverness

When you compare driving instructors in Inverness, check the badge in the windscreen. A green badge means a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). A pink badge means a trainee Potential Driving Instructor (PDI), teaching legally while still qualifying under supervision. Knowing which you have booked helps you judge experience fairly.

Ask about the Longman specifically — and ask which Inverness centre your instructor works from for car tests, because the Longman Drive and Seafield Road listings cause real confusion. Will lessons cover the Longman roundabout, the A9 and Kessock Bridge approach, Millburn Road and the Scorguie hills as a planned programme? Ask about manual and automatic, female instructors if you would prefer one, and pickup from your exact address. Our guide to driving schools near me explains the rest of the checklist — lesson structure, progress tracking, mock tests and cancellation terms.

A proper mock matters in Inverness because the test changes character so completely. Include an A9 section, the Longman roundabout and a hill manoeuvre, marked strictly. Ignore any guaranteed-pass promise.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Inverness driving test centre?

Current car tests are listed under Inverness (Longman Drive), at the multi-purpose test centre, 4 Longman Drive, Inverness, IV1 1SU, on the Longman Industrial Estate. A separate DVSA site on Seafield Road, IV1 1SG, on the same estate is listed for lorry, bus and ADI tests, and older pages mention a former centre at Cradlehall. Check your booking confirmation for the exact centre and postcode for your date — this is the Inverness detail most worth double-checking.

What is the pass rate at Inverness?

The pass rate at Inverness (Longman Drive) is 45.9% (passrates.uk, from DVSA data), slightly below the national average. Routes mix town, dual carriageway and rural driving for a catchment covering much of the Highlands, so breadth of practice matters more than any single junction.

Will I cross the Kessock Bridge or use the A9 on my test?

The A9 dual carriageway around the Longman and Raigmore features on many Inverness routes, and routes towards the Kessock Bridge approach are common — expect joining at speed, lane discipline and, on the bridge approach, crosswinds. Practise all three before test day.

Can I learn in an automatic in Inverness?

Yes. We offer manual and automatic lessons in Inverness. An automatic pass gives you an automatic-only licence, while a manual pass covers both.

Which areas should I practise most in Inverness?

The Longman estate and Longman roundabout, the A9 and Raigmore Interchange, Millburn Road and Academy Street in the centre, Scorguie for hills and manoeuvres, plus Culloden and Cradlehall estates — and some rural single-carriageway driving at the national speed limit.

How much do driving lessons in Inverness cost?

See our prices page for current packages and confirm for your postcode when you book. We do not publish a fixed Inverness per-hour price here; as context, our Manchester lessons start from £35 per hour. The theory test is £23 and the practical is £62 on a weekday or £75 at evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
