Driving Lessons in Eltham: Tests at Sidcup and Bromley, the A20 and Local Tips
Driving lessons in Eltham with door-to-door pickup and free theory practice. Manual & automatic, Sidcup and Bromley test centres covered.

Eltham is a proper south-east London suburb with its own distinct driving character: a busy High Street running east–west, the A20 Sidcup Road cutting across its southern edge as a fast dual carriageway, the South Circular brushing its western side at the Yorkshire Grey, and deep residential territory — New Eltham, Mottingham borders, Avery Hill and the Progress Estate — in between. It sits in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, but it drives nothing like Greenwich town centre: no river, no one-way gyratory, just hills, high streets and fast A-roads. If you are looking for driving lessons in Eltham, know this early: Eltham has no test centre of its own. Your test will be at Sidcup, just south-east, or at Bromley — and one warning matters. Older websites still steer local learners to Hither Green. That centre closed on 1 February 2025. Do not book around it.
Learn and Drive covers Eltham: our instructors offer door-to-door pickup, so your lesson starts at your home, work or college — no travelling to a meeting point. Exact pickup for your postcode is confirmed when you book, whether you are in Eltham town centre, New Eltham, Eltham Park, Avery Hill, Falconwood borders or Mottingham borders. We offer manual and automatic lessons, female instructors are available, and intensive courses are available for learners working to a deadline.
The test centres Eltham learners use: Sidcup and Bromley
There is no practical driving test centre in Eltham — Eltham appears on no current DVSA-derived list of London test centres. The nearest centre for most Eltham learners is Sidcup, down the A20 corridor; Bromley is the alternative used from the Mottingham and Avery Hill side.
Sidcup (London) driving test centre is at 2 Crayside, Five Arches Business Estate, Maidstone Road, Sidcup, DA14 5AG. That address is consistent across DVSA-derived centre listings and test centre directories we checked for this guide, and it is the centre covered in full in our Sidcup guide. The centre is tucked inside the business estate just off Maidstone Road, the A223 — there is no obvious frontage on the main road and the estate entrance is easy to drive past, so visit it with your instructor before test day. It offers car tests and ADI part 2 and part 3 tests, with parking, toilets and disabled access listed in centre directories. Note that Sidcup also has a separate theory test centre on Cray Road — a different site for a different test.
The pass rate at Sidcup is 58.70% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data). That is well above the national average and the strongest figure among Eltham's realistic options — but it is not an easy-test guarantee. Sidcup routes include the A20 dual carriageway, Sidcup High Street and residential mini-roundabouts, and unprepared candidates fail there at the same rate of roughly four in ten that the figure implies.
Bromley (London) driving test centre is at 121–123 Burnt Ash Lane, Bromley, BR1 5AB, south-west of Eltham via the A2212 corridor — that address is likewise consistent across the listings we checked. The pass rate at Bromley is 52.9% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data), above the national average and strong for London, earned on bus lanes, town-centre traffic and tight residential streets rather than empty roads. Choose between Sidcup and Bromley with your instructor, based on which centre's roads you can practise regularly — familiarity beats headline-chasing.
And to repeat the warning, because it catches Eltham learners specifically: Hither Green test centre closed on 1 February 2025, when the DVSA stopped carrying out tests there and moved bookings to nearby centres. It was historically the centre many Eltham-area learners were pointed to, which is why stale directories still list it. It is not bookable. Sidcup and Bromley are your centres.
You must have passed your theory test before booking a practical. Nationally the theory test costs £23 and the practical costs £62 on a weekday or £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Waits are still long nationally — the National Audit Office reported an average wait of around 22 weeks in September 2025 — so talk to your instructor about booking early. Check your booking confirmation for the definitive address for your date.
The local driving that matters in Eltham
The A20 Sidcup Road is Eltham's defining road. It is a fast dual carriageway running along the town's southern edge, with slip roads, the Fiveways junction pattern towards New Eltham and the Sidcup bypass beyond. Joining confidently, holding a legal speed, changing lanes with early planning and leaving correctly are core Eltham skills — and core Sidcup test skills, since Sidcup routes use the A20 heavily. Practise it until dual carriageway driving is boring; boring is what competent looks like.
Eltham High Street teaches the opposite discipline. Buses, crossings, loading vehicles, shoppers and side turnings compress decisions into short distances, and the Well Hall Road and Court Road corridors repeat the lesson at a slightly calmer pace. Westmount Road and the climb towards Eltham Park and Shooters Hill side add gradients — hill starts on real inclines with traffic behind you, not on a quiet practice slope. The Yorkshire Grey junction, where Westhorne Avenue meets the South Circular side, brings multi-lane roundabout judgement into your home-town practice.
The estates do the quiet work. New Eltham's grids around Avery Hill Road and Green Lane, the Progress Estate's distinctive streets, Middle Park and the roads towards Mottingham provide meeting traffic, parked-car squeezes, mini-roundabouts and the manoeuvre practice — parallel parking, pull up on the right, bay parking where bays exist — in genuinely residential conditions. School traffic around Avery Hill, Eltham's schools and the station peaks at Eltham and New Eltham stations change those streets by the hour; practise across the day.
Sidcup then adds its own layer: the business estate start, Maidstone Road, Sidcup High Street and the A20 sections in test format, or — for Bromley — Burnt Ash Lane, the town centre and its bus lanes. Cross-read our driving lessons in Sidcup guide if Sidcup is your centre; the Eltham-specific point is that your home practice and your test practice are close cousins here, because the A20 and the suburban pattern are shared.
Practising around Eltham between lessons
Private practice with a legally qualified supervising driver, in a car insured for you and displaying L plates, works best in Eltham when you alternate fast-road and street-road sessions rather than only driving where you feel comfortable.
Run the A20 in both directions — joining, lane changes, exits — then drop onto the High Street and Well Hall Road for the slow, dense work. Spend proper time in New Eltham, Middle Park and the Progress Estate on meeting traffic and manoeuvres, and practise the Yorkshire Grey and Fiveways junctions at commuter times as well as quiet ones.
Then make the centre run routine: down to Five Arches Business Estate in Sidcup, find Crayside, and lap Maidstone Road and Sidcup High Street — or across to Burnt Ash Lane if Bromley is your centre. Between drives, use our free theory practice — 6,500+ questions, DVSA-format mock tests, 3D hazard perception practice and 178 road signs. The DVSA no longer publishes official test routes, so treat any route list as a guide to road types, not a promise.
Choosing an instructor in Eltham
When you compare driving instructors in Eltham, check the badge in the windscreen. A green badge means a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). A pink badge means a trainee Potential Driving Instructor (PDI), teaching legally while still qualifying under supervision. Knowing which you have booked helps you judge experience fairly.
Ask about the specific centre you have booked. Does the instructor work regularly from Sidcup or Bromley? Will lessons cover the A20, Eltham High Street and the New Eltham estates alongside the centre's own streets, as a planned programme? Ignore any instructor still talking about Hither Green as a live option — it closed on 1 February 2025. Ask about manual and automatic, female instructors if you would prefer one, and pickup from your exact address. Our guide to driving schools near me explains the rest of the checklist — lesson structure, progress tracking, mock tests and cancellation terms.
A proper mock matters in Eltham because the A20 tempts people to over-practise the fast road and under-practise everything else. Run at least one full mock from the centre, including a high street and an estate manoeuvre, marked strictly. Ignore any guaranteed-pass promise.

Frequently asked questions
Where do Eltham learners take their driving test?
Most use Sidcup (London), at 2 Crayside, Five Arches Business Estate, Maidstone Road, Sidcup, DA14 5AG, just south-east via the A20. Bromley (London), at 121–123 Burnt Ash Lane, Bromley, BR1 5AB, is the alternative from the Mottingham and Avery Hill side. There is no test centre in Eltham itself, and Hither Green closed on 1 February 2025.
What are the pass rates at Sidcup and Bromley?

The pass rate at Bromley is 52.9% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data), also above average. Neither figure makes its test easy — both reflect suburban route mixes that reward thorough local practice.
Is Hither Green test centre still open?
No. The DVSA stopped carrying out tests at Hither Green from 1 February 2025 and moved booked tests to nearby centres. Any website still listing Hither Green as bookable is out of date. Book Sidcup or Bromley instead, as your instructor advises.
Can I learn in an automatic in Eltham?
Yes. We offer manual and automatic lessons in Eltham. An automatic pass gives you an automatic-only licence, while a manual pass covers both. Eltham's hills make hill starts a real topic in a manual car.
Which areas should I practise most in Eltham?
The A20 Sidcup Road for dual carriageway skills, Eltham High Street and Well Hall Road for dense town driving, the Yorkshire Grey junction, and the New Eltham, Middle Park and Progress Estate streets for meeting traffic and manoeuvres. Then your centre's own roads in Sidcup or Bromley.
How much do driving lessons in Eltham cost?
See our prices page for current packages and confirm for your postcode when you book. We do not publish a fixed Eltham per-hour price here; as context, our Manchester lessons start from £35 per hour. The theory test is £23 and the practical is £62 on a weekday or £75 at evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
