Brent is not a town — it is a whole borough, stretching from Kilburn and Harlesden in the south to Kingsbury and Queensbury in the north, with Wembley at its heart — and that shapes everything about learning to drive here. There is no test centre anywhere in the borough, and no single centre serves all of it: the south and west look to Greenford, the east looks to Hendon, and the borough's own driving splits between the North Circular, the A5 Edgware Road corridor and some of the busiest high streets in London. If you are looking for driving lessons in Brent, this guide covers the borough as a whole; our separate guides go deeper on Wembley and on Kilburn, and this one deliberately covers what those district guides do not — the rest of Brent, and how its centres divide.

Learn and Drive covers Brent: our instructors offer door-to-door pickup, so your lesson starts at your home, work or college — no travelling to a meeting point. Exact pickup for your postcode is confirmed when you book, whether you are in Harlesden, Willesden, Neasden, Cricklewood, Dollis Hill, Kingsbury, Queensbury, Kenton, Kensal Green, Stonebridge, Alperton or Sudbury's Brent side. We offer manual and automatic lessons, female instructors are available, and intensive courses are available for learners working to a deadline.

The test centres Brent learners use: Greenford and Hendon

There is no DVSA practical test centre in the London Borough of Brent. The borough appears as the home of no centre on the current London centre lists we checked for this guide — every centre Brent learners use sits in a neighbouring borough: Greenford in Ealing, Hendon and Mill Hill in Barnet, Pinner in Harrow. Which one is yours depends on your side of the borough.

For Wembley, Alperton, Sudbury, Stonebridge and the south-west of the borough, the centre is Greenford. Greenford (London) is at 96 Horsenden Lane North, Greenford, Greater London, UB6 7QH — an address consistent across DVSA-derived centre directories and the main test centre guides — with a second site, Greenford (Whitton Avenue East), at the 8th Greenford Scout Group, The Lodge, Whitton Avenue East, Greenford, UB6 0JU, agreed across the main directories. Both list car and ADI part 3 tests, with no on-site parking and no toilets; you park on nearby streets, with Sherwood Avenue advised for the Whitton Avenue East site. Your booking confirmation names your site.

The pass rate at Greenford (London) is 41.43% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data) — below the national average, reflecting routes that mix the A40 corridor with tight Greenford and Sudbury residential streets. Our Wembley guide covers the Wembley-to-Greenford preparation in full.

For Kingsbury, Queensbury, Colindale-side streets, Neasden's east and Cricklewood, the natural centre is Hendon. Hendon (London) driving test centre is at 3 Aviation Drive, Beaufort Park, Hendon, London, NW9 5TZ — an address consistent across centre directories and test centre guides, just inside Barnet off the A5 corridor, in the modern Beaufort Park development by Colindale. Centre directories list car and ADI part 3 tests there. The pass rate at Hendon (London) is 51.37% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data), around the national average — but its routes, built around the A5 Edgware Road, the A41 and Staples Corner-side traffic, are busy London routes, not an easy option. Mill Hill, at Unit 9, Grannard Business Centre, Bunns Lane, NW7 2DQ, is the further alternative some north-Brent learners consider.

You must have passed your theory test before booking a practical. Nationally the theory test costs £23 and the practical costs £62 on a weekday or £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Waits are still long nationally — the National Audit Office reported an average wait of around 22 weeks in September 2025 — so talk to your instructor about booking early, and about which centre fits your postcode before you book, because Brent's split means the wrong choice can add an unfamiliar second area to learn.

The borough driving that matters in Brent

Staples Corner is Brent's defining junction, and it belongs to the borough as a whole rather than to any one district guide. Where the A406 North Circular meets the A5 Edgware Road at the borough's eastern edge, traffic circulates and merges in multiple lanes with the M1's start just beyond — it is one of the most demanding ordinary junctions in London. It is not a test-route feature from Greenford, and Hendon routes work the A5 and A41 corridors around it rather than the junction itself, but every Brent driver uses it for years afterwards. Build it into later lessons — quiet times first — because the lane discipline it demands is the borough's core skill in concentrated form.

The North Circular (A406) itself runs across Brent's middle, through Neasden and past the Brent Cross side, and it changes the borough's traffic completely in both peaks. Neasden's own centre, around the shopping parade and the station side, and the roads past the Welsh Harp reservoir towards Kingsbury bring a calmer, more residential Brent: Kingsbury Road (the A4006) running north through Fryent and Queensbury, wide interwar streets, and roundabout traffic around Queensbury station — good, honest everyday driving that is underrated as preparation for either centre's residential sections.

The southern high streets are the third environment, and the one the district guides cover least. Harlesden's High Street and Craven Park corridor are continuous observation driving — buses, loading vehicles, crossings and shoppers in constant succession. Willesden's High Road and Dudden Hill side, Kensal Green's Chamberlayne Road, and Cricklewood Broadway on the A5 — where the road runs along the borough boundary with traffic for Staples Corner and the city in both directions — each test the same scanning and patience in a different rhythm. Kilburn High Road, which Brent shares with Camden, has its own guide in this programme; the point here is that southern Brent is not one high street but four or five, and competence means reading each on its own terms.

Timing matters everywhere in Brent. The North Circular and A5 are slow in both peaks, Harlesden and Willesden are busy through the whole working day, school traffic reshapes Kingsbury and Dollis Hill, and Wembley event days — covered in the Wembley guide — ripple out across the borough's western roads. Practise across those conditions before test day.

Practising around Brent between lessons

Private practice with a legally qualified supervising driver, in a car insured for you and displaying L plates, works best in Brent when you plan it by side of the borough, because your practice map and your test map are different documents here.

Start near home for control and manoeuvres: the Kingsbury, Queensbury and Dollis Hill residential streets in the north and east, the Kensal Green and Stonebridge streets in the south. Then work your corridors in real traffic — Kingsbury Road, the A5 through Cricklewood, Harlesden and Willesden high streets — reading bus lane signs properly rather than avoiding the lanes altogether, and add the North Circular between the Neasden and Staples Corner junctions in stages for dual-carriageway confidence.

Then commit to your centre's area as its own project. Greenford bookings mean the Sudbury corridor: Wembley Hill Road and Sudbury Hill, Horsenden Lane, Whitton Avenue East and the Greenford estates. Hendon bookings mean Beaufort Park and Colindale: Aviation Drive, Aerodrome Road, Colindale Avenue and the A5 and A41 sections Hendon's routes use. The DVSA no longer publishes official test routes, so treat any route list as a guide to road types, not a promise.

Choosing an instructor in Brent

When you compare driving instructors in Brent, check the badge in the windscreen. A green badge means a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). A pink badge means a trainee Potential Driving Instructor (PDI), teaching legally while still qualifying under supervision. Knowing which you have booked helps you judge experience fairly.

Ask the Brent question directly: which centre — Greenford, Whitton Avenue East or Hendon — does the instructor actually work from, and does that match your side of the borough and your booking? Will lessons cover your home corridors — the A5, Kingsbury Road, your local high street — and your test area as a planned programme, rather than only one of the two? Ask about manual and automatic, female instructors if you would prefer one, and pickup from your exact address. Our guide to driving schools near me explains the rest of the checklist — lesson structure, progress tracking, mock tests and cancellation terms.

A proper mock matters in Brent because the test is always in a neighbouring borough. Sit it at the centre you have booked, marked strictly. Ignore any guaranteed-pass promise.

No. There is no DVSA practical test centre anywhere in the borough of Brent. Learners in the south and west — Wembley, Alperton, Sudbury — use Greenford; learners in the east — Kingsbury, Neasden's east, Cricklewood — use Hendon. Your booking confirmation names your centre.

What are the pass rates at Greenford and Hendon?

The pass rate at Greenford (London) is 41.43% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data), below the national average. The pass rate at Hendon (London) is 51.37% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data), around the national average. Which Brent areas does this guide cover that the Wembley and Kilburn guides do not?

Harlesden, Willesden, Neasden, Cricklewood, Dollis Hill, Kingsbury, Queensbury, Kenton, Kensal Green and Stonebridge — plus the borough-wide features no single district owns: Staples Corner, the North Circular and the choice between the Greenford and Hendon test areas.

Do Greenford and Hendon tests include dual carriageways?

Yes, both can. Greenford routes use faster roads around the A40 corridor and the A4127; Hendon routes use the A41 and A5 corridors. Expect confident joining, lane discipline and appropriate speed, then correct slowing for residential streets. Motorway driving is not part of the car test.

Can I learn in an automatic in Brent?

Yes. We offer manual and automatic lessons across Brent. An automatic pass gives you an automatic-only licence, while a manual pass covers both.
