Driving Lessons in Bournemouth: Test Centre & Coastal Roads
Driving lessons in Bournemouth with door-to-door pickup and free theory practice. Gillam Road centre, Cooper Dean and Wessex Way tips.

Bournemouth learners are sometimes told they have to travel to Poole for everything. That is not accurate — and getting it right matters, because your lessons should be built around the centre you will actually use. Bournemouth has its own practical test centre in Northbourne, and Poole's centre, a few miles west, is the nearby alternative many learners also consider. This guide deals honestly with both.
Learn and Drive covers Bournemouth: our instructors offer door-to-door pickup, so your lesson starts at your home, work or college — no travelling to a meeting point. Exact-postcode pickup is confirmed when you book, whether you live in Northbourne, Winton, Charminster, Southbourne, Boscombe, Kinson or near Bournemouth University at Talbot Village. We offer manual and automatic lessons, female instructors are available, and intensive courses can be arranged. Here is what driving instructors Bournemouth learners need to know: the Gillam Road centre, the Cooper Dean roundabout, Wessex Way, and how bournemouth driving lessons should prepare you for all of them.
Bournemouth driving test centre
Yes — Bournemouth has its own practical test centre:
Bournemouth Driving Test Centre, 21–23 Gillam Road, Northbourne, Bournemouth, Dorset, BH10 6BW.
The centre sits in a residential area in Northbourne, roughly two miles north of the town centre. Plan around this: there is no car park available at the test centre, so your instructor will manage arrival and parking on nearby streets. Male and female toilets are available, and you can get into the centre in a wheelchair. Routes set out from Gillam Road into the Northbourne and Ensbury Park residential streets before reaching the town's bigger roads.
We have deliberately not quoted a current pass rate for Bournemouth itself, because we could not verify one from a current DVSA-data tracker for this centre — figures shared without a checkable source are not worth repeating, and you should be wary of any site that states one confidently without showing where it came from. What we can tell you is the verified figure for the alternative centre below.
Poole Driving Test Centre, 4–20 Harwell Road, Nuffield Industrial Estate, Poole, Dorset, BH17 0SA is the nearest alternative, around four miles west of Bournemouth. Some Bournemouth learners book Poole because of availability, and DVSA itself has directed Bournemouth candidates to Poole when the Bournemouth centre has been unavailable. The pass rate at Poole is 53.38% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data for the financial year ending March 2026), above the UK-wide 50.04% from the same source. If you book Poole, though, your preparation must shift: Poole routes radiate from the Nuffield Industrial Estate and use different roads, including the Fleetsbridge area and Dorset Way — a higher pass rate on unfamiliar roads is no advantage at all.
Fees are standard wherever you test: theory test £23, passed first at the separate theory centre in Bournemouth town centre on Old Christchurch Road, and practical test £62 on a weekday or £75 on weekday evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Nationally, the average practical wait was around 22 weeks (NAO, September 2025) as context; check both Bournemouth and Poole availability on GOV.UK when you book, and tell your instructor immediately which centre you have chosen.
The local driving that matters in Bournemouth
The Cooper Dean roundabout is the single most influential feature on Bournemouth's route network. It is a large, multi-lane roundabout joining Wessex Way (A338), Castle Lane East and Holdenhurst Road, with traffic moving quickly in several directions. Examiners can assess almost everything there — approach speed, lane choice, signalling, observation and exit discipline. Practise it from every approach, get into your lane early, hold that lane through the roundabout and signal off at the correct exit. Last-minute lane changes at Cooper Dean are where Bournemouth tests most often go wrong.
Wessex Way itself is the town's dual carriageway spine, with a 50 mph limit through much of its urban section and slip roads that demand proper speed matching. Joining too slowly and forcing lane-one traffic to brake is a serious fault; repeat Wessex Way joins until matching traffic speed feels routine. Castle Lane West and Castle Lane East (A3060) form a chain of large roundabouts — lane discipline is assessed all along it, and traffic near the Royal Bournemouth Hospital adds ambulances, visitors and pedestrians.
In contrast, Winton and Charminster give you dense high-street driving on Wimborne Road: buses, delivery vehicles, crossings, cyclists and cars pulling out of bays. Talbot Village and Wallisdown, around the universities, bring heavy student foot traffic, bus lanes and 20 mph zones, while the residential streets off Wimborne Road and Redhill Drive in Northbourne and Ensbury Park are where manoeuvres are set — cambered, parked-up streets, not empty car parks. Add frequent speed-limit changes between 20, 30, 40 and 50 mph on a single route, and the pattern is clear: concentrated difficulty at a few big features, and constant speed awareness everywhere else.
Practising around Bournemouth between lessons
Private practice should target Bournemouth's concentrated challenges. With a suitable supervising driver, in an insured car displaying L plates, and only on skills your instructor has already taught you, repetition at Cooper Dean is worth more than almost any other practice in the town.
Approach Cooper Dean from the Wessex Way, Castle Lane and Holdenhurst Road sides in turn, at quiet times first and then in normal traffic, until your lane choice is made early every time. Practise Wessex Way slip-road joins repeatedly, building to traffic speed before you merge. Drive Winton's Wimborne Road at a busy time — a quiet Winton teaches you very little — and use the residential streets of Northbourne, Ensbury Park and Kinson for parking and reversing practice on real cambered roads. If you have booked Poole instead, redirect this practice honestly: spend your hours around Harwell Road and Poole's own route roads, not on Bournemouth features you will never be tested on.
Support it with theory revision: our free practice offers 6,500+ DVSA-format questions, mocks, 3D hazard perception and all 178 road signs.
Choosing an instructor in Bournemouth
Anyone charging for driving lessons must be DVSA-registered. The badge in the windscreen shows the level: green for a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), pink for a trainee instructor (PDI) teaching legally under supervision while completing qualification. Ask which you are booking — and then ask the Bournemouth-specific questions that matter more.
Which centre do you teach for — Gillam Road, Poole, or both, and will my lessons match the centre I have booked? Will we drill Cooper Dean from multiple approaches and practise Wessex Way joins properly, or stay on quiet roads? Can you run a full mock test starting near my centre, including managing the fact that Bournemouth has no on-site parking? Do you offer manual and automatic, and pickup from home, college or the university? Our guide to driving schools near me helps you compare the driving instructors Bournemouth offers on teaching quality, not just headline price.

Frequently asked questions
Does Bournemouth have its own driving test centre?
Yes. Bournemouth Driving Test Centre is at 21–23 Gillam Road, Northbourne, Bournemouth, BH10 6BW. It has no candidate car park, so arrival is managed on nearby streets. Poole test centre, at 4–20 Harwell Road, BH17 0SA, is the nearest alternative.
What is the pass rate for Bournemouth test centre?
We could not verify a current Bournemouth pass rate from a DVSA-data tracker, so we do not quote one — be cautious of unsourced figures. For comparison, the nearby Poole centre's pass rate is 53.38% (passdrivingtest.co.uk, from DVSA data). Your familiarity with your chosen centre's roads matters far more than either figure.
Will my test include Cooper Dean roundabout and Wessex Way?
Very often, yes. Cooper Dean is the most influential junction on Bournemouth routes, and Wessex Way's 50 mph dual carriageway and slip roads feature frequently. Expect to have both drilled thoroughly in your lessons.
Should I book Bournemouth or Poole for my test?
Book the centre you have practised. Bournemouth is your home centre; Poole sometimes offers different availability, but its routes start from the Nuffield Industrial Estate and are genuinely different. If you switch centres, tell your instructor straight away so your preparation switches with you.
Can I learn in an automatic in Bournemouth?
Yes, we offer manual and automatic lessons in Bournemouth, and female instructors are available. A manual licence covers both gearboxes; an automatic licence covers automatics only — worth knowing if you plan to drive different cars later.
