How to change your theory test appointment

Admin5 min read

Move a GB theory test earlier or later, change centres, check the working-day notice rule and confirm the new booking, with separate Northern Ireland guidance.

For a theory test in Great Britain, use the official GOV.UK change service to move your appointment earlier or later, or select a different centre. Give at least three full working days' notice to avoid paying again. For this rule, Monday to Saturday count as working days; Sundays and public holidays do not.

A change is only useful if the new appointment fits your preparation and circumstances. Before replacing a date, check travel, documents, any support arrangements and the actual confirmation. This guide concerns theory appointments; do not apply its notice period to a practical driving test.

Decide what you need to change

Start with the reason, rather than searching for any available slot. You might need more revision time, a different location or an appointment that no longer clashes with work or education. These lead to different choices.

If you want more preparation time, define what the extra time is for. “Study everything again” is difficult to measure. A more useful aim is to revisit weak topics, practise unfamiliar hazard clips or complete a realistic timed session without repeating the same errors.

If the problem is travel, check the proposed centre's actual address before selecting it. A familiar town name does not establish that the building is near the station or that the journey works at the appointment time. Consider the return trip as well as arrival.

Check the notice period before choosing a slot

“Three full working days” does not mean any 72-hour period. A weekend or public holiday can change the calculation, and a day that counts for this service may not match your working week. Do not wait until a guessed last minute to act.

Read the official service's current instructions and any deadline shown for your booking. If the notice calculation is unclear, contact the service rather than relying on an informal example that may assume a different test date or holiday calendar.

Also distinguish changing an existing appointment from booking a retest after a failed attempt. These are separate situations. A minimum retest interval is not the same thing as the notice required to move a booking you already hold.

Use the official service and check the details

The online GB change service asks for your UK driving-licence number. Have your existing booking confirmation available too, so you can check that you are managing the correct appointment and refer to it if you need help.

Work through the change deliberately:

  1. Open the GOV.UK page above and follow its booking-service link.
  2. Check the appointment currently shown against your confirmation.
  3. Review the proposed date, time, centre and any payment information.
  4. Complete the confirmation steps rather than stopping at the availability screen.
  5. Save the updated details and check that they match what you intended.

Seeing a convenient slot is not the same as securing it. If a connection drops or the result is unclear, check the booking through the official service before attempting another transaction. Avoid making a second payment simply because the first screen did not behave as expected.

Changing and cancelling are different decisions

If you still intend to take the test, consider the change route before cancelling. Cancellation removes your existing appointment; it should not be treated as a guarantee that the alternative you saw will remain available while you rebook.

If you do want to cancel, use the separate official theory-test cancellation guidance and check the refund conditions. Keep cancellation and refund confirmations rather than assuming that closing a browser or not attending cancels a booking.

The same distinction applies to a lesson or course arranged around your test. Changing a government appointment does not tell your instructor that your availability has changed. Contact the school separately and check the terms of any tuition booking affected.

What if you must change at short notice?

The GB change page says you will normally have to pay again inside its notice window. It also lists circumstances where a refund can be requested after a short-notice change: qualifying illness or injury, bereavement, a school or college exam, or a stolen driving licence. Follow its evidence and contact instructions; do not assume every reason is covered.

Keep a clear record of the appointment, what prevented attendance and any supporting document requested by the official process. Send personal or medical information only through that process, not to an unofficial booking intermediary or a public social-media reply.

Forgetting the appointment, finding travel inconvenient and meeting a published exceptional-refund condition are not interchangeable situations. If you are uncertain, explain the facts to the official support team and ask what applies, rather than manufacturing a reason that sounds eligible.

Recheck support and test-day arrangements

If support was agreed for a reading difficulty, disability or health condition, confirm how the proposed change affects it before finalising. Do not assume a different appointment automatically has identical arrangements. The GOV.UK support guidance explains how to request help and what may need to be supplied.

Update your calendar and travel plan once the booking is confirmed. Remove or clearly mark the old appointment so that you do not accidentally follow its time or address. Re-read the current document and arrival instructions rather than relying on the plan for the previous date.

Our theory-test duration guide helps you allow time for the full visit. The appointment is not simply a 57-minute gap to fit between other commitments.

Changing a theory appointment in Northern Ireland

Use DVA's online booking-management service, not the GB change route. Nidirect says your appointment notice identifies the last day to change or cancel. Changing by that date carries your payment over; cancelling by it gives a refund. The service requires your booking reference and driving-licence number.

Read your own Northern Ireland notice rather than transferring the GB calculation to it. Keep the updated DVA confirmation and check any support-evidence instructions shown there.

Make the revised date part of your learning plan

Use extra preparation time for specific improvements, supported by our four-week theory study plan where helpful. For practical tuition alongside revision, see our driving courses or contact us. A well-managed change should leave you with both a confirmed appointment and a clear reason why the new date works better.
