Motorway driving lessons in the UK: what learners need to know
How motorway lessons work with an approved instructor, what to practise and why speed, joining and leaving need a plan.

Learners can drive on a motorway in Great Britain when accompanied by a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor in a car fitted with dual controls and displaying red L plates. A motorway lesson is supervised training, not permission to drive there alone before passing the practical test.
The aim is to build safe judgement: joining at a suitable speed, holding a steady lane, checking mirrors early, leaving a safe gap and preparing for the exit before the slip road begins.
What happens in a motorway lesson?
Your instructor should explain the route and the controls before joining. You can begin with observation from an easier road, then practise joining, following distance, lane discipline and changing lanes only when the mirrors and blind spot are clear. Traffic, weather and your confidence determine how much is appropriate in one session.
Joining safely
Use the slip road to build an appropriate speed and look for a safe gap. Check mirrors, signal when it helps others understand your plan and avoid forcing a vehicle already on the motorway to brake. Once you join, settle into the left lane unless you are overtaking or following signs that require another lane.
Leaving safely
Watch for countdown signs, move left in good time when it is safe and signal before taking the exit. Slip roads can feel slower than they are, so check the speedometer and reduce speed as needed for bends. Missing an exit is safer than making a sudden late move.
How to prepare
- Refresh mirror checks, signals and following distance on ordinary roads.
- Practise reading signs early rather than waiting for the last arrow.
- Ask questions about breakdowns, hard shoulders, variable limits and smart-motorway signals.
- Follow the current Highway Code and your instructor's safety briefing.
Our instructors can plan a motorway session when it is suitable for your experience. You can also use theory practice to revise lane discipline and motorway signs.
