If you’re preparing for your UK driving test, understanding the manoeuvres you’ll be asked to perform is crucial. At Learn & Drive, we ensure you’re well-prepared to tackle these tasks with confidence.
The Four Core Manoeuvres
During your driving test, you’ll be required to demonstrate one of the following four manoeuvres:
- Parallel Parking at the Side of the Road
This manoeuvre involves reversing into a parking space between two vehicles. You’ll need to check your mirrors and blind spots, signal appropriately, and manoeuvre the car smoothly into the space without hitting the kerb or other vehicles. - Bay Parking
There are two types of bay parking:- Reversing into a bay and driving out: You’ll reverse into a parking bay and then drive out.acclaimdriving.com+6gov.uk+6en.wikipedia.org+6
- Driving into a bay and reversing out: You’ll drive forward into a parking bay and then reverse out.wearemarmalade.co.uk+8gov.uk+8en.wikipedia.org+8
- Pulling Up on the Right-Hand Side of the Road
In this manoeuvre, you’ll be asked to pull over to the right side of the road, reverse back for about two car lengths, and then rejoin the traffic. It’s essential to check for oncoming traffic and pedestrians before performing this manoeuvre. - Emergency Stop
Approximately one in three driving tests includes an emergency stop. The examiner will instruct you to stop the vehicle as quickly and safely as possible. This test assesses your ability to react promptly to unexpected situations.
Additional Test Components
Apart from the manoeuvres, your driving test will also include:
- Independent Driving: You’ll drive for about 20 minutes, following directions from a sat nav or traffic signs, without turn-by-turn guidance from the examiner.
- General Driving Ability: You’ll demonstrate your ability to drive in various road and traffic conditions, including stopping at the side of the road, pulling out from behind a parked vehicle, and performing a hill start.
- Vehicle Safety Questions: Before starting the test, you’ll answer a ‘tell me’ question about how you’d carry out a safety task, and during the drive, you’ll answer a ‘show me’ question, such as showing how to wash the windscreen.
