Use this calm UK driving-test-day checklist for your appointment, licence, vehicle, eyesight, warm-up, timing and questions before the test begins.

On UK driving-test day, confirm the appointment, licence, vehicle and meeting details before you start driving. A short checklist reduces avoidable stress and leaves your attention for safe decisions. Check current requirements on GOV.UK because documents, vehicle rules and test arrangements can change. Your instructor can help you prepare, but the official guidance remains the source of truth.

Before leaving home

Check the test centre, time and meeting point, then allow for traffic and parking. Bring the licence and documents required by the official booking. Wear footwear that lets you feel the controls and take glasses or lenses if you need them to meet the eyesight standard. Keep the confirmation accessible in case you need to check a detail.

Eat, hydrate and sleep as normally as possible. Do not experiment with a new routine or medication without appropriate advice. If you feel too unwell or the appointment no longer fits your circumstances, use the official rearrangement process rather than arriving unable to concentrate.

Use a warm-up for familiar routines

If a warm-up lesson is arranged, use it to settle into the car, check mirrors and practise the routines you already know. A short drive through ordinary traffic is more useful than attempting a completely new manoeuvre minutes before the test. Ask one or two questions, then allow the instructor to keep the pace calm.

Confirm the car is suitable, insured and available for the appointment. Check fuel, controls, tyres and any required equipment with the instructor. If another vehicle is substituted, take time to understand its controls before moving into busier traffic.

During and after the test

Listen to directions and ask for clarification if you did not hear one. Continue scanning; do not stare at the examiner or assume a minor mistake has ended the test. If you miss a direction, follow the road safely and wait for the next instruction. A calm recovery is part of responsible driving.

After the result, ask the instructor to help you understand the feedback. A pass still leaves skills to develop, and a failure is evidence for a better plan rather than a permanent label. Record the specific decisions that need work before your next drive.

A practical checklist

  1. Confirm the official test time, centre, licence and meeting point.
  2. Bring suitable footwear, glasses and the documents GOV.UK requires.
  3. Check the test car, insurance, controls and warm-up arrangement.
  4. Use signs and safe decisions if you miss a direction.
  5. Review official feedback and choose the next practice priority.

Questions learners often ask

Can I use a sat-nav during the practical test?

Independent-driving instructions may use the examiner’s approved method. Follow the current official test guidance and ask for clarification if you are unsure; do not use a personal device outside the rules.

What should I do after a failed test?

Read the official feedback with your instructor, identify the repeated cause and practise it in varied settings before choosing another date.

Use this guide to prepare questions rather than to replace an instructor or the official rules. You can compare Learn and Drive course options, practise the related topic in the learning hub, read the related learner guide and send a booking enquiry when you are ready. Tell us your area, experience and manual or automatic preference so the next step can be realistic.
